Hey guys,
Just a question of thought really...but in your opinion, is Bisection an effect which people will go away thinking "how the heck" or is it more or less "hmm, that's kewl, but of course it's done like this..." It's interesting because the moment I saw the performance video, I figured it out right away. It's just one of those things...you don't want to put an effect into your repertoire that people will think is lame and obvious to figure out. Will be interesting to hear some feedback... In a word... yes. But, and this is important, it's 110% about how you do it. If it's a surprise and is done quickly, I guarantee no one will see it coming and it's a killer effect. If, however, you advertise that you'll make half of yourself vanish, then remind the audience of this, then do it, then say Tada!!, it'll bomb bad. This one is about presentation. I always have people walking away talking about it.

Spend more money for Shrinker or do DC laser illusion... if you can figure it out....

I used Bisection once and it got great reactions, but you really have to make it LOOK real. The way you perform it is what is going to sell it.

Tony Brent does it at his Orlando show... He worked it good, lots of 'gulps' from the audience.
Hint, do it after rope through body. |

Nick:
Whenever I am seriously considering adding an illusion, but question whether it will pass audience scrutiny, I invite a few non magician friends to view a video of someone else performing the illusion, and ask for their reaction to it. Nothing more, I don't tell them that I am considering it for my show, or anything else. Just their honest reaction to the trick/routine. If it passes through the lay people, then I run it by my jaded wife and daughters, and if it makes it through their critical, "I'm not impressed" apathetic attitude, then I know that it is a winner! I am with Christopher on that one. In those kind of illusions, laymen are responding extremely well, depending on how you present it, and even if it seems bvious to magicians.

I used to do this "street style" and I'd hold a trench coat in front of my assistant and bisect her. I usually got some pretty good gasps. It works pretty well also if you use it in conjuction with the pocket sawing in half!

I agree with allan somewhat. I did it for family, but they aren't exactly laymen, and got ok reactions. but then I did it for friends and got great reactions.
HINT do not tell them your are doing a sawing in half. it programs there minds to think "I will see how he will disguise this trick" as opposed to "Holy Crap what am I seeing- that's impossible!" |

To answer the question of the post...ABSOFRIGGINLOUTLY it fools. (is that a word?)
The reactions I get with Bisection are incredible. If done well, you practice before hand in front of a camera so you can see what you do right (and need correcting), and get a good story/performance around it, this effect kills. To the audience, it looks like a special effect that you would see in a horror film, but they are seeing it live. I have closed my performances and variety shows with this effect. OK, can you tell that I like it?

I only did the illusion one time and it went over really good. Like they are saying in the beginning of the forum you have to perform it correctly. You have to be really quick but in my opinion you have to let the audiance know what you are doing or like another post said use it after the rope through body illusion.

The first time I saw Bisection it completely fooled me, I was not expecting it at all.
I do not do the illusion so I cannot say how well it works from a performers point of view but from as a spectator it got me pretty good. |

And our magic should be all about the spectator's point of view. Thanks for that post CGIKing. That is the same reaction that I get with laymen seeing this effect.
The timing has to be right. It can't be so fast that they don't know what they are seeing, but not so slow to allow them to dwell on it. And please, one huge mistake I see all the time on YouTube performances: please ensure that the your waistline is exactly the same height - both when you are vanished and when you are not. This is a huge tip for success of this effect. Those of you who own Bisection know exactly what I'm talking about. Video yourself doing this multiple times to make sure it looks right. Your legs should not look like they are grew, it should look like you vanished the top part of your body. OK, go out there and vanish!

In boredom, yesterday I did a practice of this in my front lawn, with my girl friend taping. Well the neighborhood kids saw (none of them know me) and they stood across the street staring at me for about 30 minutes talking among themselves and pointing, no joke.

Joshua, I'm no mentalist, but I'm going to make a prediction. You will have no trick or treaters this Halloween as you have now become the neighborhood version of the creepy old witch.

It can be angly, like many other illusions, but Andrew's new Bisection Unlimited DVD covers a method to do it surrounded.

The book hints at a method that will show you how to do it surrounded as well.
