One of my clients asked me to make an elephant disappear or shrink, and as a magician, of course, anything is possible. My idea is to make the elephant stand on a platform that I created and slide it to backstage (passing thru backdrop), but then I have a new problem. I can't customize the stage because the level of the stage is different from the platform gimmick that I have.
Another option is making the elephant walk backstage, but the time isn't quick enough, so it can make the audience suspicious. Is there anyone who knows another method? I really appreciate it.

There is a cheaper, and funny, method in Andrew Mayne's Illusionbook.

You'd be surprised at how fast an elephant can walk. (Wilson, Blackstone, Henning)

Try shrinking the elephant with a variation of the shadow box (XXXXL size). While the shadow is shrinking, you have time to get the pachyderm on the move.

Blackstone Senior's vanishing horse, Mark Wilson's vanishing car, etc. Elephant does not necessarily have to go anyplace with those.

Or, you could have my stepmother flown in.
She's about the same size as your average elephant, and yet can squeeze into a grey "mini" van. Raise the curtain, have her drive off, take your bows. .: childish snicker :. |

Not too many people on here have ever made an elephant vanish... A lot of peeps may have some good ideas, but keep in mind, if they have not been worked out, you could be in for trouble. Firstly, make sure your elephant is well trained and you use her trainer along side the elephant. Secondly, make sure your stage can support the weight. Any sudden cracking or soft spots in a stage, the elephant will react to... Best of luck to ya.

Just a few weeks ago I was backstage at a show with a vanishing elephant, and she left the illusion under her own power.

Does it have to be a real elephant? What about making it appear?
I think the shrinking idea would be great if you could get a mommy and a baby... And as John mentioned, weight and training are your biggest concerns...and poo. Poo is a concern, too. "Souvenir baggies will be sold in the lobby."

I have made a pile of things disappear over the years, and one thing I have learned that makes the illusion powerful is timing.
It is a given that most things you make vanish will invariably be dragged offstage somehow under the audience's noses. The larger the object, the longer it takes. The secret is to disguise the amount of "vanish" time in the audience's mind. How long was the elephant really out of sight? How long did it seem to the audience? I just performed one of my own illusions where I make seven girls vanish from a surrounded platform and reappear in the audience. As a magician, you could probably figure out how it was done by just being there. However, the vanish takes around 2 seconds, and the reappearance is instant. Or so it seems! I have a way of convincing the audience that the girls are there right up until the last moment. My point being: if you can focus less on how to get the elephant out of there, and come up with a way of making it appear to be instant, the illusion will pack a bigger punch. Plus, your audience will leave there thinking, "The elephant can't have walked off - it vanished in just 2 seconds!" Hope that inspires you! Julian P.S. That's a terrible joke, Starrpower. I have to use it...

He did it outside with absolutely nothing behind. The camera even cranes up before the elephant enters, and then the walls come down. I'll see if I can find the link and post it. Magic Fingers has a motorcycle appearance which method could be used to vanish an elephant in open air... The good thing is that elephants do move quicker than what a lot of people think... Here it is. It's Paul Daniels...Duh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnOuquXpePU

I loved the video of the elephant vanish. It was very smooth, and the time to move the elephant was taken up in the bits of business. Daniels is a real pro.
