I use it in my kid show when I pull up an adult volunteer for the "Finger Chopper of Death Illusion".
The adult has to be brave and to prove his strength and stamina I have him ring the bell. He cant do it and we keep the gag runnning for a few switches. Even if he swings it really hard and does make it ring it doesn't matter because he then proved that he is brave enough for the following effect. S. Patrick |

So even if they turned it upside down whilst finding that it doesn't ring, all is well?
does the thing just stop moving or what? PM if necessary. wanna get some info before I sacrifice my monthly box of cigars for this thing... Baba |

You have to be most careful when purchasing one of these as I cannot tell you how many "Bad" ones I have encountered!
As stated before, if the child or volunteer is even able to get it to ring once with great force, than the gag is ruined! A proper Bell should NOT be able to be rang even with great force! =Frank=

I just bought one used and there's NO WAY you're gonna make it ring by just shaking it, no matter HOW HARD you do.
Anybody know how to determine the maker of one of these or the age? Steve |

But can someone tell me if the spec. looks under the bell if they can see the "why" it doesn't ring?
I'd hate to beat them up with the bell. |

They'll see the "hammer" but not know why it won't move...

As Ken said, you don't have to worry about anyone seeing the gimmick if they look inside the bell.
I love mine, and it is a really nice looking prop, but it does not always work reliably. The problem can occur if someone really shakes it HARD......I mean really hard. I've only had it happen a couple times, but still that's too much. I think kids have a tendency to try and shake it harder than adults do. Even if they shake it hard and get it to ring, it is only a single "ding" that comes out, so maybe that seems like it started to work and then broke. They will look inside the bell. That seems to be a typical reaction, because most of the time they shake the bell, nothing comes out, and they immediately turn the bell upside down and look inside. Now and then they will try and touch the hammer, and they will see that it is stiff, but they still have no clue as to why. If mine worked like it is supposed to, I would highly recommend it. I think I just got a bad one, and had I known earlier I would have tried to send it back and get another. I don't know how much Guy stands behind his products, but I should have contacted him and tried. Regan

I used to use Tel's Bell, but I did have one, or two problems with mine. I found as others have said that if shook very hard it could be rung and that happened, which was enough for me to stop using it. It is a great prop though and it could have been mine at fault. Just my thoughts.

I am looking for a reference to doing this with a magnet. I know I saw it somewhere, but can not find the source now.
I have a Tel's Bell but I am trying to get a similar effect using a Christmas bell but without the child's help. |

Just purchased Tel's Bell, but when it arrived the the mechanism is so strong that it is nearly impossible to ring the bell. contacted the Manufacturer who told me that if I could undo the nut inside I may be able to replace the spring with a slightly weaker one. Otherwise the prop is useless to me, Does any body know how to undo the nut?

I know this topic has long been dead; but I'm here to breathe a little life into it.
I considered getting one of these many years ago, but did not, (it may have had something to do with my wife telling me I wasn't going to spend that much money on a gag bell). Now I don't do kids magic anymore - I stick to close-up and strolling. And I shied away from getting a Tel's Bell because I have a friend who uses one and I didn't want anyone locally thinking I was copying him. But my mind kept coming back to how much better some of my routines would be with a bell. And I'm divorced now. So...I bought one. I love it. I, however, will rarely use it as a gag and I won't be handing it to any children. So the odds of a really jarring swing shouldn't occur. I like the idea of carrying around a bell as part of my act and the bonus is that it only rings when I'm good and ready for it to ring. Makes for a fairly strong magical moment when, out of "nowhere" you produce a large, heavy, noisy item when there was no previous noise indicators that any such item was on your person. |

Hey Bendy--I am still thinking of getting this as well--delayed for many of the same reasons (mostly cost, less about the wife). And I love your thinking as far as making it a production item; been looking for something to produce from my THIS that was not a standard bottle of champagne or such.
Were you able to find a quality bell reasonably priced? If so, where? Oh, and I live right up the road (Clermont, FL). See you around! |
