Went to a Pat Page talk the other night and he done a couple of TT tricks which rocked. The one I liked was you roll up a note and vanished a silk then unrolled and re rolled the note up again and passed a pencil throw the note tube and as he did this the silk came out and he finished clean. Ive heard and seen similar things but this version was so smooth and so so simple.
Thumb tips for ever

A classic and a great fooler is Gene Anderson's vanishing lit match. Van Cleve fooled me with it for weeks before I got it ( I am ashamed to say). The moves are so carefully worked out you just don't suspect a TT, or I did not.

I love the TT. Try making the handkercheif vanish and appear inside your mouth! It gets great reactions if you act like you're pulling it out of your throat

There are NO old tricks. Just old presentations.

I second the Examining the Thumb Tip by Alexander deCova. Great methods to handling the TT and get away from the poking and sticking your thumb in your fist. Also Treasures Vol 1 by deCova has a great routine, purse swindle, that shows this new method of handling.
I do agree that a realistic TT gives you more freedom and just makes the whole routine seem more open and fair. Do not let anyone tell you that this doesn't matter, because this is a different time, and technology has allowed us to me more fee with our magic, and opens new doors for us all. Stevie D

Don't give up your TT just because you feel it's well know. I was visiting family over the 4th and a great Neice was telling me about her magic set including you guessed it a TT. The next day I showed a little magic and used a TT I happen to have in my car. She had no idea how it was accomplished.

I'm in full agreement with Millerhouse. Watch the DeCova dvd and you will have an entirely different outlook about the TT.

My new favorite trick is producing 2 gold fish from a king sized tt. I saw this trick in Darwin's TT book. Load gold fish and a little water into your TT. Borrow a dollar bill from someone and ask them to draw a picture of the beach onto the dollar. Take the dollar and roll it arround your TT. Do whatever you do to make the magic happen, and then pour the water and gold fish into a glass.
Every one remembers this trick and talk about it. I love it. |

I still vanish lit cigarettes, dozens a year for more than 30 years, and I've NEVER had someone say I was using a TT. I do it bare handed, as opposed to in a hankerchief, shich may help put the "wise" ones off, but I think the real trick is in the post-vanish handling -- pointing it right at them if angles permit, showing the mouth empty, holding open the lapels of my jacket, etc, which give them the idea that the hands are empty. The TT stays on until attention wanes - 30 seconds or more.
In my stadard kid's show, I use 2 TTs. I also do passe passe salt and a bill switch with regularity, and sometimes a liquid suspension in a rolled up bill or vanishing ketsup (very messy, be sure to tuck in some napkin afterwards to seal the TT). And again, never been exposed. So use your TT with confidence - that, I think, is the real secret... marc the magic man Posted: Aug 26, 2007 4:39pm PS -- I usually carry two - a vernet for switches and a vinyl one for cigarettes, since they are fireproof. I love the vinyl ones, but they discolor quickly so the vernet gets more use day to day ... Marc the Magic Man |

Interestingly enough, it has been my experience that laymen (especially kids with magic sets) who have seen a TT, don't think magician's actually use them "because anyone can see that lame fake thumb."
Hehehe...and these are the very ones that get fooled by a TT in use.

For a TON of ideas using the thumb tip...and it will be more than you will use...or want to use in a single performance for sure:
Check out Jay Sankey's Hundred Dollar Miracles DVD. While a lot of the effects can seem to be repetitous... There is some real usable/workable stuff in there, and I was surprised at the length of the DVD. I thought it wasn't going to end thinking, "HOW CAN THERE BE ANYTHING ELSE?" And it went on... The good thing with the repetition is that if someone says..."Hey, can you do that thing with the....," there is probably some effect that is "like" it that can be done without having them try to catch you in a second performance.

Working the streets & markets performing 8-10 times an hour pitching & selling magic -I use the TT a lot-especially to draw a crowd
No 1 effect is blank paper to $20 note -effect on lay audience is huge!! Also foreign affair at times by Greg Wilson as a change etc.... In corporate shows I use it for Lit Cig vanish to great reactions as well as silk to egg etc, as long as you don't stuff a hanky in your hand etc you can fool most people even if they know about them-I do this all the time |

It still works despite movies like Night At The Museum. Here is a story I will try to briefly recount... A couple months ago when in between shows at a Harvest Festival event a few kids and my partner (co-magician friend) were just hanging around. This one teen, kid named Daniel whom I know, asked to see some magic. I did a simple little silk routine, using 2 silks and my tip. Not only did I get away with it but received applause by all in the room. Daniel has an interest in magic and knows a few card tricks and is learning more etc. asked me how did I do that. I was a bit surprised but asked him if he ever saw the movie Night At The Museum (I had been having the same concerns about TT effects lately especially since this movies' recent inept exposure) and he said yes. I kind of smiled and stuck my thumb up and he still was'nt catching on and that's when it hit me, that I just shouldn't be overly concerned about it if it is something I do and can do fairly ok. I have had similar concerns over other effects but every time I find out that it is me and not true of typical audiences.

I still use my TT and as widely as its known Ive never had any one suspect I was using it! and Been using it for Years I guess they don't suspect I have one and I do not use it for the same audiance time after time again and if I should have the same once in a while I variy it! Another important thing to remember is don't be self concious of it!

I agree with Bendy
I haven't seen the movie, but if it only exposes the thumb-tip as a silk-vanishing device, I don't think people will suspect it in other effects. And, like Glen said, even with silks people wont suspect it if you're good with it. Pardon my spelling. |

On streets and markets I'd imagine people are moving around quite fluidly & some people might be behind you or coming up from behind you to join the crowd... isn't that a danger when in the middle of a TT move that people might see the TT sliding off and then back on your thumb etc? I'm interested in your feedback and experience in this matter because I'm thinking of starting to work similar environments eventually. I've done lots of close up at tables and strolling but no streets. I find that in restaurants that you can quickly gauge if any tables are too close behind you or not (if not... its safe to use TT) whilst for strolling I don't do TT work because of angles and due to fact that anyone might walk up to me or past me/behind me at any moment & possibly see the TT.
