Does anyone have any fun patter they would like to share, or links to some?

(this is for the gaffed Hopping Half trick)

Cheers!

Hi MplsMagic,

Here's a story I wrote for my Hopping Half routine. I hope it gives you some ideas:

Wizard's Duel

The Wizard Gall and Wizard Kay (show coins individually)
Had met for dueling one fine day.
Now, Gall struck first, his wand did wave
And sent the other far away. (place half dollar in pocket)

But Kay appeared to great surprise, (show half returned)
For he was strong and very wise.
Then Kay stood tall and with a sneer
Made Wizard Gall just disappear. (place penny in pocket)

A growing sound, then thunder clap,
And in a moment Gall was back. (show penny returned)
He cast a spell hard as he could;
Now just some smoke where Kay had stood. (place half in pocket)

“So I have won!” Gall said with glee.
“No. You are not yet done with me.” (show half returned)
Then Kay invoked an ancient light
‘til Gall was taken from our sight. (place penny in pocket)

Now silence fell upon the field
Where two great wizards would not yield.
So powerful his magic used,
The Wizard Kay had vanished too! (show hand empty)

This is not mine! It belongs to Steve Bacho, and the only reason I am listing it is Steve was nice enough to post it previous for all to see and I happened to copy it for use later on. This is great!

I've always loved the "Hopping Half" effect, but couldn't come up with patter for it. I finally came up with the following - anyone care to critique? Don't be afraid to tell me it stinks - just remember to tell me why.
Thanks
Hopping Half - Script
Plot: Coins in Love
Sleeves up.
"This is a love story - between two coins. The coins are an American half-dollar and an English penny. An international affair of copper and silver."
Display the two coins, flashing the backs of each.
"They met in a vending machine in London and have been together ever since. In fact, you'll see that they are now inseparable."
Both coins in left hand, prepared for silver removal.
"Silver was once sent back to the States for toll booth duty."
Put silver in pocket.
"But soon found his way back to London through the magic of love."
Reveal silver and copper in left hand. Prepare copper for removal.
"Copper was once thrown into a well, along with a child's wish."
Put copper in pocket.
"But was rescued by the magic of love."
Reveal copper and silver in left hand.
"Once, Silver was shipped to a coin collector in Bucharest."
Put silver in pocket.
"But the magic of love still brought them together again."
Reveal silver and copper in left hand.
"Then a tragic event occurred."
Clench left hand in to fist with the two coins.
"Copper was left on a railroad track. The 5:27 came by and Copper was no more."
Remove copper and put in pocket.
"Since Copper couldn't return, Silver used the magic of love to join Copper in pocket change heaven."
Open left hand to show silver disappeared.
Courage is the willingness to be afraid and act anyway!

It seems like hopping halves, like cups and balls, may be best left with simple descriptive patter.

Steve, GREAT patter line and it goes perfect with the routine. Smile

ps) Is it just me or is Hopping Half not very practical for roving? Every time you're finished, you have to hide out somewhere and reset the coins. I LOVE the effect, but it's a real pain to use in a busy environment.

Hi Viris,

If I'm the "Steve" you mention (Wizard's Duel patter), please feel free to use the story. If I'm not the Steve you mention, sorry for the confusion.

Wow, that stuff is very interesting! I would still use the basic "Where's the coin?" type patter.

There are those who can use rhyming patter and those who can't. I'm one of the latter, and every time I see a well thought out rhyming patter story like "The Wizard's Duel" I envy those who can pull it off.

Steve L., thanks for your patter story too, I like the romantic approach it takes.

Best regards,

Rannie

If you would send me your email add I would gladly send you my Not So Gaffless HH routine as well. I have sent it to some Café friends in the past. It was taken from my 2003 Manila Lecture with Aldo Colombini.

I actually do the non gaffed version and as far as the gaffed version goes, I just use the s&m coin and the she**s for other tricks....great trick though.

I sometimes tell a story about a secret and torrid love affair between JFK and Queen Elizabeth. They had a secret meeting place (my hand), but very often (and quite suddenly) one or the other of them would be called away immediately for an important meeting (my pocket). But as soon as that meeting was over, they would meet again... etc, etc. Until the day JFK was killed, and now nobody goes there anymore (last time, hand shown empty).

I say I "sometimes" use it, because most of the time, I agree it is better to just do it "straight."

Yachanin,
that's some very good patter. I stopped using the hopping halves, along with other gaffs that could only be used for one trick on account of pocket management, but I might bring it back for special occasions, with that patter...

I just watched that video, it was amazing, but how does it play for regular people with no music?

? Hopping Halves must be one of the most versatile gaff sets available...
