I use a wonderful patter that was given to me here on the forum. I am reluctant to post it as I no longer remember who gave it to me or under what circumstances. It is titles "Lucky Coins using Hopping Halves By: Randall Merlin –8/02"
Does anyone know anything about the author? Bob |

Okay guys!
We've got John F. Kennedy, nick-name "Jack" And Queen "Elizabeth" Jack and Elizabeth? There's got to be some good Pirates of The Caribbean stories to come from this... Savy? :pirate:

Before I ever saw this forum, I created my own patter story for the “Hopping Half.” Please feel free to use all or any part of it. I would appreciate a PM from anyone who decides to adopt it. I would also enjoy seeing any improved version of my idea. OK here it is:
A couple named Johnny and Mary set up housekeeping in a cozy one bedroom apartment in (the city of your choice). You could always recognize Johnny by his silver blond hair whereas Mary was a coppery redhead. Shortly after they started living together they had a fight that caused Johnny to stalk out in anger. However, he cooled off quickly and snuck back into the apartment when nobody was looking. A couple of weeks later they had another squabble and this time it was Mary who got so angry that she walked out on Johnny. But she too calmed down pretty quickly and snuck back into their home. A couple of months went by before they had yet another quarrel that caused Johnny to walk out again. As you might have guessed, he once again had second thoughts that caused him to return to Mary’s side. These fights occurred periodically with either one party or the other taking off and then secretly returning. However, one day Mary got so angry that she said she was never coming back again. I guess Johnny must have believed her, because he also vamoosed leaving nothing but an empty apartment. |

IMO "The Hopping Half" *requires* a patter story. WIthout one, it is another "gotcha" effect. I believe that type of routine hurts the cause of magic. THe average person is not entertained when he/she is being made to look like a fool.

You're kidding right? Hopping Halves, Oil and Water Effects, 3 Card Monte effects, either you guys are magicians "trying" to fool people OR entertainers, trying to entertain others, I have never thought of any effect I do, hopping halves, color monte, 3 card monte, any of them as "gotcha" effect, I have always strived to make ANY effect I do entertaining and not a "gotcha" I guess all of magic can be a "gotcha" if you present it that way, I try to make every effect I do personal, and if anyone gets got, its me.

Here's mine. "In The Minds Eye"
Props needed,..Two plastic coin purses (matching),an extra Copper Coin and Two cards with pictures of each coin, Heads and Tails.(I had the Print Shop copy each coin (I enlarged them a bit) on Sticky Back paper and attatched them to playing cards).Set-Up,..One Purse with what ever change I have to spend in my Right Pants Pocket,(I carry this all the time so people will get used to me having it).Second Purse in Left Pants pocket with some spare change and the Kennedy and a matching Copper Coin Inside and the G#@!ed Coin on the Outside Bottom of Purse. The Two Cards in Shirt Pocket. The Routine goes like this, "Have you ever heard the sayings..Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" or "It's the thought that counts"?How about "It's in the minds eye"?"Do you know what that means"?"Well,it means that you know something so well you can actually see it in your mind when you think about it"."Let's try an experiment with that concept"."I have two cards with pictures of coins on them,(show cards)a Kennedy Half Dollar and a English Copper Penny"."I want you to examine both cards and remember them".(Take cards back and place in Shirt Pocket)"Can you see them in your minds eye"?"Well we will see".(Reach in Left Pants Pocket and bring out the Purse with the G@#$ed coin Classic Palmed underneath}"Here I have a coin purse,..do you know what I have inside my coin purse?...coins of course".(Hand uot the Kennedy and Copper coin to be examined,....and openly slide the purse back in Left Pocket (retaining Palmed Coin),take back the Copper coin with the Right Hand and Kennedy with the Left Hand (watch you angles),then proceed with the routine ending with,"As you can see,it was all in your minds eye". The only person that 'gets got' as you say, is the spec. It's a magician versus the spectator. That may be good for some, which is great, but for me it's not my style. Oil and water isn't a challenge. It's a demonstration of a magical effect. 3 card monte can be played as a challenge if you want but it can also be a friendly demonstration of what the street cons do. Kind regards Sean |

If he/she attempts to *derisively* con a volunteer or the audience as a whole, it is bad magic. Now, if you happen to be clever enough to do this in such a way so as to make the victim(s) *genuinely* laugh about being put down, then your name is probably Michael Finney. |

Great ideas and stories. Hopping Halfs works much better with a good story. I never liked the gotcha, or your stupid, or no your wrong, presentations or the comment, "Figure that one out." that someone used at the end of a routine I saw on a video of someone doing this. These make it less entertaining and more of a puzzle and challenge. Not good. Theses stories make the routine much more enjoyable for me. Cheers!

Start with an extra pair of regular C and S coins in the ticket pocket, or in a clip fastened inside the pocket with a safety pin, or in a small clothes pin.
One day I went into a magic store and the owner walked right up to me and said "Look here sonnie, I've got a Copper coin and a Silver coin. Ya with me?" He put the silver coin in his pocket and asked what's left and I said "Copper". "Right you are sonnie" he said, "Copper - and Silver!" He put the Copper coin in his pocket and asked me what's left. "Silver?" I was getting a bit nervous. "Right you are sonnie" he said, "Silver - and Copper!" He put the Silver coin in his pocket - again! - and asked me what's left. "Two coins!" I said and he said "You're catching on!" as he showed me the two coins. He put the Copper coin in his pocket and asked me what's left. "Two Coins" I said, confidently. "Right again Sonnie!" he said, showing his hand empty, "But now they're over here." (pull the regular coins out of the pocket with the right hand). "Do you want these?" he said. Transfer the two coins to the left hand, shake them, then execute a Dingle steal. "These are magic coins and you can have them both for just Twenty Dollars" (drop off the coins in the ticket pocket and pull out a Twenty Dollar Bill and show it). I said "That would be great" but then he said "Just kidding sonnie. Didn't I tell you they're magic?" Open both hands and show them clearly empty except for the $20 which you return to your pocket. |
