Title: Let’s Get Flurious by Gary Kurtz
Medium: DVD (re issue from video) Arena: close up, stand up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Gary Kurtz is one of those guys who I’ve heard of and had never seen perform nor had I read any of his material. When Murphys Magic Supplies started re packaging older videos in DVD format I figured I wanted to see what he was about because of the frequency of his name coming up. I didn’t know what to expect and to be honest thirty seconds after putting the DVD on I was asleep and boy did I need a nap. I then went for awhile before giving it another shot. I want it known, Gary Kurtz fooled me and fooled me bad with every routine and did it in an entertaining fashion. That says a lot because I’ve been around the block a few times and rarely does this happen to me…it happens with individual routines but not with every dang one. First the production is pretty good. The sound was a bit out of synch (not sure if that was a problem with the original video or not) but because you are watching the moves rather than his mouth it was no big deal. The sound was good and level and that makes me happy. The performance was shot in front of a live audience so you have than dynamic and the guys shooting the film knew what angles to hit and when to hit them. The explanations were done with a grey background and Gary in black, not that black on black which just covers up everything and while some might call it artistic it isn’t good for instruction. I like the background to be just that and not giving a lesson in black art. Again the guys with the cameras and the editor knew what they were doing and give us the best views of the actions. Sure the image isn’t as clear as todays digital equipment gives you but there is no problems with the production. Be warned. This isn’t hallway hit man magic. This is well thought out and beautifully presented routines that will entertain and mystify the spectator but you had best be prepared to practice to do it justice. It is all within reach of most everyone with a bit of experience but you are not going to watch the video then immediately run out and show your mom…I mean you could but don’t. Do watch and listen to Gary’s discussion about the psychology of presenting magic. Very interesting and valuable. I also want to say that Gary did some moves with coins (I’m not a great coin guy) that I have never seen before and in his hands they are amazing. I’m going to be practicing them for a bit before trying them on folks but I’ve not seen this type of coin magic in some time. Beautiful work and I think it will impress many of you. Let’s take a look at some of the material: Forced Thought: This started out as, what I believed, another version of Red Hot Momma. I was wrong and it quickly took turns to become a mix of cards and mentalism and I was fried. This routine would be a good card opener because it will get the attention of the spectators and also has humor built into it. Signed, Sealed, Delivered: How about a card routine with a hint of mentalism, a card in impossible location, and is funny at the same time? This is it. I watched the performance and had no idea how he dide it. A card is selected and signed and is found in an envelope…in an envelope….in an envelope sandwiched between two indicator cards. Duuuuude. Sharing the Limelight/Code of Silence: More mental based card magic (this makes it more interesting, just like gambling themes do). The neat part here is you get to get your pal to be in cahoots with you using an interesting idea. You guys with magic buddies will love this routine and the Code of Silence can be used with other presentations and for you hall way hit men this could make you a real reputation. I like the code because it was similar to one I developed to help my girlfriend in high school get better grades, some might call it cheating but hey, I was in love. Attraction: No coins, no cards, just a couple and their rings and an pencil. A great little routine using the power of the mind and loooove. I love this type of routine and it is very well thought out. This is another reputation making type routine and the fact it appears impromptu is an added bonus. Oh, this is a ring on rod type effect but the presentation is a real winner. Trio in Three Copper/Silver Continuation Flurious These are all coin routines that use gimmicks or special coins but they are not what makes the routines so good. The routines are all very well thought out and the angles and everything work. You will need to go through these step by step and you will have to practice (unless you are gifted) but well worth it. Flurious may have, note I said MAY HAVE, been an influence for Garret Thomas’ (forgive spelling) great routine presented on the Live From the Jailhouse DVD. It may not have been as well. Either way it is a really nice routine with jumbo coins and in Gary’s hands looks great. The other coin routines are also very good, Trio in Three has some beautiful handlings, ones I’ve not seen before as I previously stated. All worth looking at. There you have it. All this material is top notch, in fact I’m surprised they didn’t try to stretch it into three videos when it first came out since that was the popular way to release stuff back then. Solid, working, and well taught…..I’m real happy I stumbled into this. I don’t know if Gary Kurtz is still out there working but if he is I hope to see him live. I was very impressed all around with him. Look for this at your favorite magic shop, if they don’t have it tell ‘em next time the order from Murphys Magical Supplies to get it for you. |

Kurtz abadoned magic around the turn of the centure and is full time mentalist in Canada currently. He has had at least one mentalism tv special in french language.
He has also two excelent lecture videos from Ron MacMillan convention, avaible from international magic on dvd and 2nd video from A-1 multimedia called "Creating magic". The reason his tapes aren't on 3 dvd set is mainly because they are made by different company than L&L. Also they were made on the time when DVD´s were just a dream or very little used, and magic videos werent done in dad´s garrage to show someones 15th variations of other peoples, mainly stolen, material Anyway anything from Gary Kurtz gets my highest recommendation. Even if you don't use anything he shows or teaches you still learn quite a lot about magic and routining from him. J-M |

Gary also has one of the best books out there 'Unexplainable Acts' written by Richard Kaufman. My favourite Magic book ever! He also has lots of little manuscrips and notes out there which are simply the best. Gary is bar none my favourite Magician of all time!

I've had the video of this since about 93 and I've used some of the routines constantly since then. Flourious and the copper silver continuation are favourites.
BTW, three volume sets didn't start appearing for another four or five years. The norm back then was to put out a couple of videos, perhaps a year apart. Kurtz did this, and made another tape for A1 called (I think) Creating Magic. Take care, Ian |

Kurtz was a brilliant magician and an amazing technician. Too bad he got lured to the "dark side". Seriously, I am willing to bet his mentalism is equally as impressive.

His mentalism seems to be working out very well for him these days. I'd definitely love to see him work one day.

"Let's Get Flurious" and the second vol, "Creating Magic" contain some of the very best coin & card magic I've ever seen. The construction of these routines and Gary's flawless technique are a joy to behold.
Even if you never perform any of the effects, there is much to learn from these DVD's. Iain. |

Gary Kurtz is incredible.
There is a DVD out of his current mentalism show. It's a French Canadian production intended for the general public. In it, he gives explanations to his tricks. That section is quite interesting... Gary's sleight-of-hand has no equal, but his misdirection techniques are even better. It is extremely interesting to see how he has combined all of these skills to produce a mentalism show, proving that sleight-of-hand has its place in a mentalist show. Many forget that it is Gary who came up with the flurious concepts that so many magicians use today. Gary was instrumental in the development of guys like Carl Clouthier. Gary Kurtz ranks amongst the top 2-3 magicians that have had the most influence on my magic development. I just regret that he has stopped sharing his material. But I can't blame him. |

I love these videos. These are probably my two favorite videos that I never perform material from. I have no idea why. I love the magic, construction, theory, and technique behind most of the routines. For some reason, they are not usable for me right now. Has that ever happened to you?

So it wasn't that he got ticked off at magicians and stormed off? Good. I can see someone going to mentalism because it is a challenging performance field.

I love the Trio in Three effect. The only place I have ever seen it explained is on this video. It is not in the Unexplainable Acts book. Does anyone know if this is effect is written up anywhere? If so, where?

I think that Gary Kurtz has published a few material for mentalism under the name Jas Jakutsch.
I don't know his mentalism work but some say that it is stunning and brilliant. |
