My female dove has laid two eggs. The daddy did not sit on the eggs at all. It appeared that the other male broke the eggs and then both males destroyed them. All this within a six day period.
Any suggestions for assisting the eggs in the future? Max |

Yes, separate the males into 2 cages. As long as you have both males together, they're will be problems just make sure you leave the correct one with the female.

Now that will be a tricky one to figure out - "Who's the Daddy? - Next on the Jerry Springer show"

Isn't that Maury who does the who's the daddy stuff? Dave hit it on the head, the two males do not need to be in the same cage with the female, only the mate, otherwise you will have that sort of behavior all the time, a dominance thing. If you get the wrong male, you won't get mating. Doves are lifetime maters.

It's getting so all the shows are about "who's the daddy" Maury, Springer, Judge Hatchett, and divorce court to name a few. I think if you want to make a lot of money in today's day and age, just open a DNA clinic. Seems like there's no limit to the number of customers you'd get.
Thank goodness it's not that difficult with the birds.

Thanks all for your advice.
How long should the 'other' male be in a seperate cage? Max |

Forever. You cannot mix two males in one cage. Aside from destroying eggs, they will fight constantly. Males are territorial and will always fight for ownership of the cage. This applies unless you have an extremely large cage or aviary where they have plenty of room and stay out of each others way. Even then, you have fights at times.

Thanks Dave.
Maybe you should write that book. Max |

I have one pair of doves already and am getting another pair this saturday. They live in quite a big aviary (12'x6'x3'), so should I be worried about there being dominance problems between the two males, or is the aviary big enough.
Thanks ~Eddy |

Eddy, this should be a large enough aviary for two males. They will fight occassionally if they invade each others space but for the most part, you should be fine. My indoor aviary when I had over 30 birds was 10' x 6' x 7'. I had multiple males and they did fight sometimes when they flew to the opposite side of the aviary but nothing serious.

Thanks Dave,
The only problem may be that there is only one night box at one end of the aviary, which may be when they cross paths! Hopefully there will be no major problems though and your 30 birds in one aviary reassures me! Thanks again, All the best, ~Eddy |

I never used a night box. Again, since my aviary was in the basement, I turned out the lights at night and they were fine. They don't necessarily need a night box but outside, they should have somewhere to go for shelter. If you box is the width of the cage, you may want to separate it into two separate compartments.

Yeh, I was thinking about doing something like that, but probably only if it gets really bad, as the pair I currently have don't even sleep in there at night.
They don't sleep in the night box because they like to go to the perch which is highest off the ground to sleep. Even if it gets cold and rains, they still go up there. I took the perch away one night and they got really confused, flying back and forth where it was, so I decided to put it back. ~Eddy |
