I've just seen this weeks South Park episode. the episode is how David Blaine creates this suicide cult. Of course anything on South Park is never taken seriously or anything but it is neat to see magicians are getting enough publicity to be included in shows like this.

I'll bet he wishes his levitation looked as good in real life as it did in the cartoon.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

For that matter, I'll bet he wishes his levitation looked as good in real life as it does in his television specials.

Regardless of my personal feelings about Mr. Blaine, I must say that in my experience his TV specials have helped us all a lot more than they have hurt.
People on magic boards and newsgroups love to have this guy and complain about technique, etc. BUT, I have seen a marked INCREASE in the number of people who want to see magic. I'd rather have a thousand Blaines than any number of exposers. And while I have the floor, let me say that I put James Randi, et. al. in with the Masked Magician. Exposure is exposure. It's the pot calling the kettle black. There is NO reason for anyone skilled in the magical arts to tip the hand of anyone. If the person in question is breaking a law, then let the legal system handle it. If they are merely making $$$, leave them be or one day they may rise up against you and "expose" your effects. I realize many of you here will disagree, but that's my opinion.

Neo: What truth? Boy: There is no spoon. Neo: There is no spoon? Boy: Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. |

People who bash David Blaine, just like those who have bashed David Copperfield, just like those who bashed Houdini - are jealous. The only way to really prove yourself superior to any other magician is to go out and put on a better show than they do.
I heard that Alain Choquette, for awhile, was in greater demand in Vegas than Copperfield, because his magic had such a personal feel to it. Very interesting . . . David Blaine is an interesting guy, but I'm not sure why so many magicians feel threatened by him. Does he even do regular shows that people pay to go see? All I've ever seen him do on TV is walk around the street doing tricks for free. I also saw him do a few really cool things for Peter Jennings at the "Turn of the Century" special. He ate a black thread and then pulled it out as a hair on his belly... very weird... But, is this what intimidates magicians everywhere I turn and makes some want to be his disciples? If so, that's kinda' sad... |

For what it's worth, a couple of years ago in a Linking Ring article, Bill Malone listed his favorite magic performers as David Williamson, Tom Mullica, Luis DeMatos, David Blaine, and Steve Forte. I thought the inclusion of Blaine was interesting.

I don't know why Blaine ate his face on South Park, as he seems to have accomplished the much harder feat of vanishing up his own backside...

What is there to be jealous of Blaine about? He has absolutely no showmanship skills, character or presence, he talks like he's from "the hood" and every one of his effects were edited so much that of course they are going to look like miracles. I do however agree with David though that his specials have helped us to an extent other than it seemed to intise the "Street Magic Revealed" specials to be produced. I just get tired of hearing from every layman that I meet how great David Blaine is knowing what a P$%s poor performer he is. Your brother in the art, Aedryan |

Magic is the Art Of Illusion. If the spectators believe that you are good, you are. Blaine managed to convince MILLIONS.
He must be doing something right. Anyone who refuses to see otherwise is in the wrong business

I don't often play the "devil's advocate" but here goes (only for a moment though.....)
David Blaine performed "magic" and got paid. I quite often see some pretty lame, and frankly - less enteraining "magic" elswhere. So what is the point? Is the point that he faked his effects? I guess I don't get too head up over that since, I use a variety of means to show some in a way that is it isn't. Maybe the line is between - gimmicked performances, and a lie being presented as true. No, he didn't float up 3 feet high on the street. So what? Also the argument seems to be that he got wide exposure due to TV, and is now seen by many as a "great magician" and he really isn't a great magician so that is unfair? How many of us are really as good as we would like to think - and have others think? Is he over-rated? Probably. So what? If we rate him downward appropriately, it won't raise anyone else in stature. And we look like a bunch of whiners. Anyway, it seems that we really are complaining out of envy, rather than a quest for the purity of the art! Or at least it looks that way to me. However, the fellow who gave away the "Fearson/Copperfield" effect is a whole different case.... BroDavid

Hey now - if DB is a member, he might not appreciate some of these remarks! I rather liked his "method" of showmanship. I think magic is a bit like comedy - different strokes for different folks. Some comedians deadpan stuff and are completely hilarious. Others have the flair and flamboyance and are just as funny. It's a bit a matter of taste, I think.

Hello, once again my friends. It seems as if some of us are much mistaken about certain people and the "outlaws", if you will. Rest assured, I will be posting on this in my
"official" catagory, The Darker Side of Magic. David_Libertine, Either see my previous posts or contact me. Either way, you need to be in the know with the rest of us. ~*~ Again, I come to the defence of those who have no defense, no voice. It is not how good he is, nor how bad he is. It is not on how much money he makes. Know then, that we should support him in whatever way he comes, lest he becomes as The Unspeakable. |
