Loop DVDs Volumes 1 through 3
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There have been multiple reviews already discussing the individual effects, so I'll aim my review at a more overall-feeling...I've listed a few of the effects from each DVD, but I'm not going through each on that is taught. Volume 1 Volume 1 is by far the best for beginners. It starts at the most basic level. It discusses lighting conditions in brief (that's really covered more in Daniel's DVD, Volume 2), discusses how to warm up your loop to decrease the chances of it breaking, and discusses what to do if by chance your loop DOES break. He goes over the basic Haunted Deck routine along with a few other ideas including a very cool rubber band routine that allows the spectator to pluck the band from mid air (that's a very strong selling point beceause you don't have to touch the rubber band after it begins floating)...and they do it without the loop breaking. Volume 2 Volume 2 is the best DVD for NON-card magic. They got it right when they labeled Daniel as "the genius." Life is fantastic...but I think the trick that is it he most underrated on this one is Hair. Its VERY easy to do, so I've already tried it on my "test" people (the one's who's sole purpose is to watch me and critique). Among his other effects are a routine with a straw (how random?) that's a cool quick-trick, Life (the butterfly effect), and a few card "moves" that don't actually use Loops, but appear to. If you're familiar with his old Lecture notes, he goes over Disc-hover along with 2 other similar moves. Daniel gets the "most creative" award of the DVDs. Daniel also has an interview segment that goes over lighting conditions, and why loops work... Volume 3 Volume 3 is the best for card magic. Justin goes over several eerie reveals, and the heart of the dvd, his Blank Out routine. If you're at ALL familiar with loops, you'll be doing Blank Out in a matter of an hour because the force is that easy....and the Blank Out routine is one with multiple "kickers." This DVD is almost a requirement for anyone intrested in card magic that wants to incorporate Loops into their routines. The other 2 DVDs touch on card effects, but this is the one that truely shines in its field. Overall, if you can't buy them all at once, I'd get them in the following order: For a beginner: Volume 1, Volume 3, then Volume 2. That order will allow you to get familiar with loops, get a basis on card handling with loops, and then allow you to expand your knowledge. For someone with Loop experience: Volume 3, Volume 2, then Volume 1. That order will allow someone already familiar with loops to elaborate on their card magic more, and then progress to incorporate non-card effects into their routines. Then picking up the first volume will allow you to fine-tune the beginner "stuff" you may have overlooked. Because people like to ask "Which is your favorite?," I'll go ahead and address it: It's hard to say a 'favorite' DVD...You really can't compare them in that way because they each focus on a different aspect of magic. If I had to pick, I'd go with Volume 3, soley because I tend to do a lot of coin/card work, and I've been using Loops with my card act for a while now...this DVD is allowing me to elaborate on that. I WILL find a way to incorporate many of Danny's moves as well though because effects like Hair and Life shouldn't be wasted. Buy them all; decide for yourself.
