I dunno, I saw Roth do that once, and it didn't work out that well...

Ran across this on youtube using baking soda and aluminum foil. Its just de-tarnishing and not polishing, but you are also not rubbing your coins into oblivion.

Any thoughts on this approach?

I was doing some research on storing gaff coins and I came across this:

http://www.vcoins.com/us/kointainer/stor......duct=545

Has anyone used this? Seems a bit expensive when compared with toothpaste, but if it works, it might be worth it.

The company is one of the most trusted companies in the coin collecting world - since about 1950.

I'm suddenly envisioning a routine centered around using a pencil eraser (with pencil attached) to "polish" a borrowed quarter, only to rub too hard and accidentally burn right through the quarter - thereby impaling the quarter onto the pencil.

Now if you could only remove the pencil and magically "heal" the quarter...

I find toohpaste, (which has baking soda), works great. Just a little bit. I doesn't make them overly shiny, but it cleans up the raised areas nicely.

Clean with eraser is not a joke !

I use this method it's perfect to clean completly or to clean just here you want (if you like dark coins with bleach for example).

You can see here if you want...

David Roth kind of realized the first part of that with his "eraser" trick. Maybe if the other side of the eraser were silver it might undo the damage?

Christophe the plated silver table ware French manufacturer is selling a liquid which instantly brings our coins to their most shiny state. Now is this the most convincing state for an ancient coin to look like? This seeems to me to be open to personal preference and there are also simple ways to darken the inner spaces so if contrast is your thing...

The add copy for the above link says the following:

Koinsolv (TM) Neutral Coin Solvent - 1-Pack
Removes:
PVC
Oil
Tape
Grease
Light Fingerprints

Harmless to coins!
No change to luster or natural toning
No change in color, even on copper coins
>Works better than acetone, alcohol, and other solvents
>Works better than our previous solvent Dissolve
>16 ounce easy-pour can with complete instructions

>Free KOINTONG coin gripper included!

Particularly with regard to expensive gaffs that have been stored in the wrong coin wallet, this sounds like a solution. I once used a liquid polish similar to the one Lawrence describes and I was not happy with the result and now I don't use that gaff - unnaturally shiny. (By the way, if anyone has a solution to the problem of a too-shiny gaff where you would like to tone down the shine, thanks in advance).

Alan

That's a nice routine for pencil through coin. Gives good motivation for the pencil going through.
