Ran across this on youtube using baking soda and aluminum foil. Its just de-tarnishing and not polishing, but you are also not rubbing your coins into oblivion.

I was doing some research on storing gaff coins and I came across this:

I'm suddenly envisioning a routine centered around using a pencil eraser (with pencil attached) to "polish" a borrowed quarter, only to rub too hard and accidentally burn right through the quarter - thereby impaling the quarter onto the pencil.
Now if you could only remove the pencil and magically "heal" the quarter... TW

I find toohpaste, (which has baking soda), works great. Just a little bit. I doesn't make them overly shiny, but it cleans up the raised areas nicely.

Clean with eraser is not a joke !

Christophe the plated silver table ware French manufacturer is selling a liquid which instantly brings our coins to their most shiny state. Now is this the most convincing state for an ancient coin to look like? This seeems to me to be open to personal preference and there are also simple ways to darken the inner spaces so if contrast is your thing...
