I was wondering if any of you witnessed Eddie Fechter performing at his peak, or even better, if you actually worked with him and routined your material at the Forks Hotel in Buffalo NY back in the early 70's?

Brian Gillis worked at the Forks Hotel and basically still does a lot of Eddie's material in his close-up.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Sadly, I missed my chance. In 1973-74 I lived in Buffalo and worked in the Coke Ovens at the Bethlehem Steel Plant(AKA the 4th Circle of Hell) with a young guy named Jimmy, whose best friend was another guy named Bob, who also worked in the plant, and was a protege of Eddie Fechtor's. After work we would usually get together for beer and Bob would knock our brains out with his card work. He invited me to go alont to the Forks with him several times, but for one reason or another I never seemed to make it there. I wish I could remember Bob's last name and look him up, it would be interesting to know what became of him and his magic. I suppose he'd be about 50 years old now, and possibly even a member here.

I don't recall the year, but I did get to the Forks Hotel nce and watched Fechter work... he was as good as any of the guys that worked bar magic and lots of fun. Good skill, funny, and knew how to entertain.

I used to have my diapers changed right on the bar at the Forks (seriously)! When Eddie "worked the tables...all he took to them was 6 quarters, a deck of cards and a personality that couldn't be equaled!!! And with that, you witnessed the best 40 minutes of magic that you would ever see in your life. Eddie led a colorful life...not only as a magicain bar tender...but Eddie was also a master leather craftsman, a tatoo artist (Reed, ya would've loved the guy)...also Eddie was a barefisted boxer an avid hunter and fisherman, did lots of work for the crimestoppers..and on occasion...Eddie was known to hustle dice hustlers!!! Sadly, Eddie his loving wife Evelyn nor the Forks is still with us! I miss them all!
Don, I can sympathize with you on the coke ovens...LOL...I worked the 13" bar mill for 12 years (That was heaven compared to the ovens). Mike |
