I have been twisting balloons for a month now, or so.
I know (that is have practiced) about twenty shapes (designs?), most one balloon shapes but few are two, three and even six balloon shapes. I started with Joe Montella's DVD Balloon School but later have searched around the Internet and found out a lot of new things I never thought about before I started twisting (a dog with a meatball?! how cool) so now I am pretty much comfortable with all the basic techniques regarding balloon animals twisting. (I haven't got into decor or the kind of techniques one must know for that). I wanted to get some book (preferably one that is sold by Amazon) that will give me some new balloon animals to my repertoire, but everywhere I go I only see books that teach the basics, usually for ages 9 to 12... Can anyone recommend a book for someone that already knows all the basics and is looking for more advanced two, three, four, balloon sculptures? There are so many books by so many authors and most of them at least seem for beginners. What do I want? I want to learn new more complex sculptures that will show me how to use all sorts of new ways to do stuff with more then one balloon. I want the sculptures to be... recognizable by anyone. I want the sculptures to be cute and charming. I don't want to make cupboard. I want the book to assume the reader already knows about the basic twists. Something like that, any suggestions? BTW, I have found out that most children don't care what they get as long as it is a balloon. I have twisted for free for three hours last Saturday and due to the amount of kids and adults gathering around me and requesting a balloon I had to stoop down to making swords, doggies, hearts and flowers. But I want to learn more elaborate sculptures for those times when I do have some time to do something more special. Thanks, Mishel.

I like the Captain Visual book. True, some of it is devoted to the beginner, (explaining twists), but his intermediate figures are really good. It recently came back into print. While out of print, copies were going for as much as $50 on ebay.

It is not a book but:
It is called “Bad To The Balloon Issue #1” Preview the opening here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNXzX4tMBI4 Bad To The Balloon follows a renegade biker balloon artist (Mark Byrne) as he teaches how to make balloons cool. His goal in creating balloon hats is to make them fast and make them great. Most hats take 45 seconds to 2 minutes to create. There is a detailed twist menu for beginners. If you can make a decent teddy bear, you can do most of the balloons on this DVD!! Intermediate and advanced twisters will love the flow and ease of this learning style. Unlike any other balloon DVD filmed, it has original music and location shots for each figure. Filmmaker Jason Jeter (Devotion Pictures) & Mark Byrne (Funny Money Productions)have done the impossible... a balloon DVD you won’t fall asleep watching!! From the opening sequence to the last sculpture, they guarantee you will be impressed. Includes instructions to make: Shark • Dolphin • Mermaid • Surfer • Tiki • Duck • Gator • One-Eyed Monster • Pirate • Tower • Swan • Dragon Available TMeyers, Larocks, Penquin Magic, Hank Lees, Ebay http://stores.ebay.com/Devotion-Pictures or E-mail me at Mark@Balloonguy,NET $24.99 most places

I second Captain Visual's book. I think it's called Big Book of Balloon Art. If not, it's close to that title.

There is a really good three book series I have that has many good multiple balloon figures. It includes a huge donald duck and daisy duck that a make for the birthday boy/girl and they just love it. It is bigger than them! It also has instructions to make many other well known characters such as popeye and the simpsons.
You can find a link to where I got them from here: Balloons New Sculptures : http://www.magicbox.uk.com/shop.php/shop......306.html Dream Balloons : http://www.magicbox.uk.com/shop.php/shop......307.html Fantastic Balloons : http://www.magicbox.uk.com/shop.php/shop......308.html All the best, ~Eddy |

I actually bought this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Balloon-Sculpting-......p;sr=8-8 which is the only book that I found available at Amazon that is featured in the TMeyers site as well. I figured all the others are not that good. But I was highly dissappointed with that book. Not at all what I expected. Half the book is just the basic dog with different proportions (I am exaggerating a little) and I aleady knew everything in it. I was under the impression the book contains some multi balloon creations which is false. I ordered from Qualatex the two Balloon Magic 260Q books they have and I hope the second, advanced one, will give me some of the stuff I want. I should get those in a few days. Humph...

I have Mark's tape and I just started working on it. I like it. Simple to make, one size fits all, and fast. I only wish that there was a picture chart with it so that I can take it with me to remind me of the figures.
If you are looking for books you are not going to do much better than Captain Visual, and Marvin Hardy's 260 balloon Magic. |

The "Dog gone" one was kinda sad. It reminded me of the first balloon dog I ever lost....... He was purple
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Well Mark, as I mentioned in the first post, I wanted something I can get from Amazon since I pretty much trust Amazon, so I got the only think they had that TMeyrs also carried and as I already mentioned I kind of got disappointed.
don't' worry, I am not getting any more books and the next two DVD sets I have in mind are yours and Patricia Bunnells Twisted Clitters since I think I should be getting into hats...

I have to say Marks DVD rocks. Regarding trusting Amazon ..... Isn’t it still individual people? That just advertise on Amazon or am I wrong on that?
I will be buying marks second DVD and his third and fourth and sixth ..... tell me when to stop mark! Or he could just do a really long one - everyone knows that the longer the better ... sorry resurrecting old jokes. I am really interested in the idea that Mark does not give out “the same balloon twice” at a restaurant (not sure if he does that for line work?). I can do that as well .…… I just go to really quiet restaurants that only get one family in with 2 kids! I just need to spend more time learning the pieces. Any way back to work….. |

Second hand books you buy from people and not from amazon but we can not order second hand books from Amazon in Israel. I don't remember why, I tried once and the site told me I can't.

Mishel: I've been doing business with Tom Meyers for what seems like forever. Their service is excellent. They also have revues of the books and dvds that they carry. His revues are honest and not sugar coated to sell a product. It's the first place that I look when I want information about a product. As I stated before, I like Marks dvd. I think that his duck alone is worth the price of admission.

Mark,
It's not that I don't trust you. I already said you're the nexst thing on my mind along with Twisted Clitters, and if/when I get them, I'll get them directly from you. The thing is, I am still trying to find a way to "live" with this hobby. It's been a new hobby for about two months now and I like doing it a lot, but I am trying to find a legal way to cover the costs of this hobby using the hobby itself. Up till now I've given away about a thousand balloons for free and this hobby has cost me one thausand New Israeli Shekels (about 250$). I am now at the stage where I am pondering the right of existence of this hobby as just a hobby. Hobbies are not supposed to cost so much. I like it, but I'll have to figure out how I go on from here. I know about 100 figures at the moment, most of them are NOT hats. I figure if I want to do something in a restaurant, I'll have to start doing some hats so your and patricia's DVDs are excellent for that. I am thinking about the possibility of going to a restaurant I like and just talking to the manger about the option of me twisting in the restaurant a few hours once a week for free, that is, my time and skill will be free but the manager will pay for the balloons or provide them. That way I'll have the chance to twist without any cost on my part, and the manager will have a new kinda thing going on in the restaurant. Both sides win. One thing that doesn't seem right is that I MAY get the restaurant owners used to free twisting and thus MAYBE hurt some professional twister in the area. I am saying MAY and MAYBE because in all my 28 years of age I have NEVER seen a twister, not in a restaurant, not in a party, nothing. I have seen only one twister in my life and that was a few years ago in a Magic convention so I am not surprised. If I wasn't into magic I wouldn't have seen him either. So theoretically I can hurt the professional twister, but practically, I don't think that one man (me) can hurt the professionals (very very few) which don't do restaurant gigs anyhow, just private events. I am still kind of carefull about it since I don't want the manager to get used to me or to assume he has any power over me when in fact I am volunteering my time and can just not show up if I don't feel like it. I would much rather volunteer for a more just cause then the profits and name of a restaurant, but I don't see a way to do that and cover my balloon costs. What do you guys thing? Am I hurting anyone? How can I keep balloons a hobby but make it an inexpensive hobby? Mishel.

Mishel I assume "twisted Clitters" is a typo ....... or is it a real idea you have ....not sure Mark will be any help don't think his stuff is that riskey .... but I bet it's a typo......
On the working for free thing at a restaraunt. Be upfont about it. If it's a regular thing and it is going to bring int he famalies in to the restaraunt you are going to make the manager some money. Let him know that you are givnign your time and skill for free as long as he covers costs (include costume, resources [ie dvds and books] and balloons) and as long as you don't feel like you are being taken adfvantage of. in other words if he gets a 50% increase in takings on that day he should feel free to reward you for it. Just make sure you know where you bth stand. May be he will be happy you taking tips and (possibly more importantly) be happy with you giving out business cards etc!!! |
