Once I know that I have a receptive group and am ready to perform, I start by producing the deck of cards. I then get them with a little bit of skill, (flourishes done WITHOUT a haughty or show-offy attitude). This flourish sequence is to make sure they realize that I am skilled, and not some guy with a trick deck of cards. Then, like Torkova, I do a series of color changes involving the audience. This entire flourish-color change sequence takes about 45 seconds. From there I go into my card transpo routine, a take on the ambitious card (similar to Gary Kurtz's) and at the end I vanish the deck. This whole sequence takes about 3-4 minutes, very fast paced but understandable, very visual and involving. I like it, and it suits me.

Well, I always do the sponge ball first. Just talk to them and while you are talking, produce the purse frame and take the sponge balls out.

I usually open a walk around set with Sankey's Holey Moley.
My close up show opener is invisible deck. Years ago I opened with the hot rod and my own hot rod finally. |

Also the way we talk in the introduction it's very important, if they see that the magician is shrunk, afraid of something, so do not go very far. Act with confidence, with full chest of air, make eye contact with everybody and have fun.

I have a residency at a restaurant that promotes family night. So, I have a lot of children to perform for. My opener uses the crayons the restaurant has for the children. I ask if they got the magic crayons from the front when they came in. If not I say don’t worry I will get them some (leaves them interested while I am gone). With the crayons I do different effects with each color – from puling a D’ Lite from one eventually turning it into a sponge ball, vanishing a crayon and making it reappear it from a child’s ear (saying that’s what I call wax in the ear – gets a laugh), and squeaker work. Not terribly difficult but amazing for grabbing the attention of children and consequently the parents.

I think it's a matter of politeness. There's always a chance that the people are not in the right mood, don't like magic or do not want to see a show for whatever reason and I will always respect that. Because of this I do not like the approaches where you go right into your first effect. In general I would reccomend to use a multi-phase routine as an opener. This could be a coin routine, linking rubber bands or crazy man's handcuffs or a multiphases card routine like the ambitious card. The advantage is that I can observe the reaction of the people at the table and can make the routine very short and close my set if they seem not to enjoy it for whatever reason. On the opposite side I can play the full piece or go right into the next piece when they clearly are drawn into it. Moreover I have a lot of time to communicate with them in between those multi-phases, which I have not with a short flashy effect. |
