I had not seen this discussed, so I thought that I would post about it.

For the past month, I have been using a free website traffic analyzer from Google called Google Analytics .

As I mentioned, the service is completely free from Google, and can deliver some very eye opening reports about traffic coming into your site.

Among the details it reports:

Referring sites
Search engines
Direct traffic
other

The thing is amazing. Imagine the power of knowing just where your visitor traffic is coming from! What country - what language. What key words were used. Which pages were viewed, and length of time spent on each page! It told me that I had 1 visitor from Russia that spent 22 minutes with a total of 12 page views.

The scope of it is downright scary. Forget about spyware, the CIA, the FBI or the NSA - Google has a grip on the pulse of the world wide web.

I would encourage any of you that have a website to make use of this free tool from Google. You will be amazed.

Chris,

Thank you so much for this. This is really magicians helping magicians. I have been looking for something like this for a while now and when you posted this, it was a real gemn of a find for me. It solves a lot of my problems and will give me so much power that I did not have before to track my website and really get some data I can use. I just updated the scripts and set up the account. Now I just have to wait 24 hours to start receiving the new data. Thank you so much my friend for this fine. I owe you one.

PS: I am LOVING your new avatar. Looking really good there my friend.

This is an AMAZING tool. Not only can you see stats in great detail, but they allow you to download the files to keep (CVS, tab delineated, XML).

Scott

P.S.
Another scary thing from google is their "history" where you can go back and see everything you have ever searched for. Google is in the data business and the data they have is unbelievable.

P.P.S.
ANOTHER scare thing from google is their new STREET level maps program. You can click anywhere in New York or San Fransisco on a map (like Earth Google) but see a 3D street level photo-realiistic image that can you can navigate within.

I tried it out when it first started, but haven't really
really looked into it, since I have pretty good
stats through my host.

I've been using analytics for over a month and love it. I'm not wild about the new beta interface they are upgrading to but it's a fantastic tool.

I just signed up a few days ago and I must say that I am very much impressed with it so far. For something that is free, it is really robust and the information is wonderful. It really adds so much more power to my wite and really is a wonderful new marketing tool for me. Thanks for letting me be aware of this.

Glad to see this, I'm paying $25/year through Go Daddy. That will stop soon.

Josh, I am aware of, but never used Go Daddy, so forgive me in advance if I misunderstand your comment.

I'm not sure if the $25/yr is for HOSTING or for STATISTICS (or both) for Go Daddy, but the Google Analytics we're all talking about is JUST for Stats. This is not for hosting at all.

You probably already know this, and I'll be the fool, but I just wanted to mention it just in case and before you cancel your Go Daddy account.

What Scott says is true. It is for stats only. I just started this past week with it and it has been a hbuge help to me so far. I am really finding out things I did not know before and I can now use it as a huge tool in my marketing.

The Overlay tool in GA is very revealing.
You look at each of your own webpages and it graphicaly shows what percentage of people then click each link available. On one of my sites I was very surprised the way people navigated through the pages.

Thanks very much Kyle and everyone. As I previously have said, the depth of information that this thing will give you is incredible. It is hard to believe that such revealing information could be had....for free! It is easy for to believe that someday soon, after we are all depenedent on it, Google will start to charge for the service. And I believe that most of you would agree that you would probably pay for it!

Scott,

Thanks for the heads up. I should have clarified what I meant. I pay the $25 for the stat thing that sounds like it's the same thing through Google.

Josh, that's good. I figured I was the idiot!

Christopher, something tells me Google will not charge for this ever. Look at Gmail, Google Earth, et. al. What Google gets is statistics. By everyone on the web placing tracking links on their sites so Google can track them, they can sell ads to you in the form of targetted search results.

Someone once explained it to me this way: Google is not a "search engine" company. Google is a data reseller/advertising company.

Still, I too have learned so much on G.A.

Regards,
Scott

Do you have to code any code on your website in order for GA to tracking your stats for you. Or is it just by signing up on GA and giving your domain name info?

Thanks

You insert a small amount of code at the bottom of each page you want tracked.

Step 1
You first set up a GA account.

Step 2
Google gives you a short snippet of code that you paste into the HTML of the page. Very easy to do.

Step 3
You then point Google to the page/site with the code.

Step 4
Google verifies the code is inserted correctly and begins to track EVERYTHING. Bwwwahhhaaahhaaa. *grin*

Step 5
Become ruler of the Universe.

There is another site that does the same thing at http://www.statcounter.com/

They give you stats for the most recent 500 hits for free. Of course you can pay to keep more data. But then you can also download the stats for free.
