If I wanted to purchase a shot glass for the three shell routine, what qualities does that shot glass need to have? How snugly does it need to fit around the shell? Will a lighter shell work with this move?

Check out the school for scoundrels website. They sell shot glasses for their routine - I think they're around 5 bucks. Try using a normal Rock glass with your shells and your pea. If you notice the shell jacking up in back then you either need a heavier shell or a softer pea.

It's hard to find one that fits without just going to the store with shells in your pocket. I think that's why SfS stopped including shot glasses with their shells in the first place.
Just find one that fits exactly over the shell and is tapered enough inside so the shell doesn't bounce up when the pea exits. For big shells like La Maggiore I found a votive candle holder that worked quite nicely at my neighborhood craft store. I think I paid a whole $.79 for it. Phil Cass uses a small airline dessert dish. It's opaque so people don't see the shell anyway and it's just deep enough to contact the top of the shell so it doesn't "click" if or when the shell does bounce.

According to an email exchange I had with Chef Anton,
"The issue is [...] the street shells are light. Sometimes, not often, they will jump or flip under the shot glass. We have found that some people get upset thinking it is faulty so we just eliminated the glass altogether." Cheers

I made a little leather bag to hold my shells and peas, it worked pretty good.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

If you have an Ikea store in your area, look there. Also try various bar and/or restaurant supply houses in your area. I needed antique ones for one of my routines, so I stopped at a whole bunch of antique shops between Houston and Nashville one fall.

If you don't have any success there then try thrift stores.
