They're more like ceramic than metal at this point. That's why they shatter so easily. Plus, engraving would most likely cut through the plating, exposing the material underneath. I suspect the only way to get a pattern is to have it as part of the mold, and that would be a pretty costly proposition.

I just got mine from supermagnetman.net. I ordered it a little larger like everyone said. It was a little bigger than I needed. I decided to coat the bottom side so it would not clank as much when picking up objects. I had some of that black rubber coating used to dip tools in. I dipped just a little less than half of the ring in the stuff. The ring now fits better and it has helped with the clanking when picking up metal objects.

A buddy of mine gave me a can, not sure where he got it. I just sent him an email to find out. I did a search and this is what I found. It is called Rubberize-it GRIP DIP. Once I hear from my buddy, I will let you know.

I just talked with my buddy. He gets the grip dip from homedepot. He said it is in with paint.

I'll have to be getting some clear nail polish, my silver SMM ring started to turn my skin green after a few days of wearing it straight. I read that they did to other people so I started wearing it to bed and such to see if it would heh.

I find it... interesting, that the one big thing that makes PK rings unique; that they look like regular rings; is so often altered. If you're going to go to that much trouble why not just stick a magnet to a regular ring?
If you're worried about green fingers, a coat of clear nail polish does wonders and it still looks like a ring. If you're worried about the noise, do something else. I don't mean not use the ring, I mean do something else at the same time to cover the sound. Study Paul Gertner's Cups and Balls routine to see how he covers the noise of the steel bearings in the cups.

I made my own ring, not by gluing but instead a removable method. There when it needs to be, gone if someone gets curious. For those concerned with cost it's way less than $10 provided you already have a ring.
The cup I use for chop work is a tennis trophy I found in a second hand shop. The cup is my guess brass with a silver coating. It's about 2 3/4" tall and about 3" in diameter in it's fattest point. When grasping the cup at times a very slight sound is made from the gimmick hitting the cup. Twice someone has asked about the sound and I casually explained that it was my ring hitting the cup and I whack it a few times to demonstrate. The lie is accepted without reservation and the bit moves on. To date no one has vocally suspected the ring, but I am ready for the spectator who has knowledge of such rings and gets lippy. |

FYI, I dipped less than half of the ring in the grip dip. The top side of the ring is silver and the bottom half (palm side) is black. No one has noticed it. Not only did I dip it in the grip dip to help with the sound, but the ring was a little big so it made it fit better. I thought I would offer the suggestion. If you are not interested in using the suggestion don't do it, but please don't knock it.
Peace.

I've seen the dip at Walmart.. in the paint section. Also, you can't get a stronger PK ring than that offered by Supermagnetman. I have several and have tested one against another.
I use cloth medical adhesive tape on the underside of my ring, the type you buy in the drug store to hold gauze in place. All it takes is a small piece, and it's easily removable.. Good, old fashion way to size a ring also..

A great solution and the right price. Ordered mine and I will use the dip stuff from Home Depot. No one cares what the ring looks like. I find it interesting that everyone was so interested in making the ring look natural - who cares. Just a thought.
