Folks,
We're obviously all passionate about coin magic (we wouldn't be visiting and contributing to this forum if we were not), but let's face it, there are only so many coin routines you can do in a row, for any audience, where they don't start looking for something else from you. This may be the wrong forum to post this subject in, but I don't believe so...and here's the reason. I'm immensely interested in what "coin magicians" use, other than coin routines, to keep their audiences entertained. Cards? TT's? Sponge Balls? I'm looking for, if you'd be so kind, to let us know what are your top 5 routines, other than coin routines, to keep the magic flowing. Preferably looking for something quick, packs small and plays big. Why? Cause I'm spending all of my time on C/S/B routines, coins across and 3 fly's. Ha Ha. Here are my top 5... Color Monte Stealth Pen 2 Dollar Window Holy Moly Sudden Death Gypsy Curse What are your's? I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I had to hear what other coin magic fanatics are using to break up their sets. Thank you all for your time. Jim. |

Hi Jim,
Very good question. I love performing coin magic but audiences like variety. Here are five of my favorite non-coin effects: 1. Wedding Ring Redux (finger ring and velvet cord) 2. Comedy Rope and Ring (Rope and 3 inch brass ring) 3. Kingdom of the Red (deck of cards) 4. Three Lesson Monte (cards) 5. Dice/No Dice (1 inch dice) These are my original routines so you won't recognize the names. What they have in common is solid entertainment value, no angle problems, props fit in your pocket, and flexible for different venues. All these routines are taught in my new hardcover book (and companion DVD) Kingdom of the Red which will be released August 31, 07. Check out the link below: Larry |

I do agree with you Jim. I believe you do need some variety and so I am working on that myself. However, my coins keep me real busy, so I only have one routine to offer, which hasn't yet been mentioned:
"Super Sound Monte" I do plan on getting Mr. Barnowsky's "Kingdom of the Red" book and companion DVD when it comes out. It sounds like it would be a great book for adding variety to anyones coin magic.....
Where I go, so do my coins.....

Really depends on whether it's formal table work, parlor, strolling or impromptu where that situation and available objects would dictate the tricks.
Here's a few favs I use for a couple situations. 1) 'Gold & Lace' finger ring and shoelace routine w/ ring flight. 2) Vernon's or an in hand 'Triumph' for formal and strolling. 3) Typical sponge ball routine for formal work and Carney's "Current Classic" for strolling. 4) ACR with either Carlysle's "Homing Card" or Dingle's "Too Many Cards" right after. 5) J.C. Wagner's "Fab Four Revisited" (cards) as either a magic effect or gambling demo. I also use elastics, pens, bills, spoons, keys, washers, IT and numerous other props for impromptu and strolling and that makes for a different list of favorites. |

I carry with me everyday in a bulldog clip (a great coin holder):
-3 half dollars to do my KrazyKoinz Across. Also a copper coin for my Crimp Copper/Silver, and a dollar size Chinese coin for my Crimp Extravaganza. I also do a couple of short One-Coin routines (one with a single playing card) but mostly one with just the coin showcasing some vanishes and reproductions on the premise of an old coin my grandfather once gave me that can't seem to stop sleep walking. To break up the coin stuff, I also carry these simple but amazing gems: -Killer Key (Oh, you mean "This key" hanging around my neck?) -B'wave (Classic mentalism packet card effect - blows them away everytime) -Princess Card Trick (Baffling simplicity at its finest) -TT/Bll Switch (Sometimes for the bill switch but mostly to do the greatest vanish of a silk ever made) -Kaleidoscope Cards (One of the best $6 buck deck trick money can buy) And like the Godfather likes to say when he's all finished; "That's it!"

Ooops, I meant to say Sankey's "Leaving Home," not Killer Key, though that's a lot of fun too.

Dr. R, do you do any magic for your patients owners?
I was pulling caps (baby teeth for you non-Vet and city folk) on a colt a while back and when I went into the mouth with my forceps I had palmed a half dollar and slipped it into the forceps, brought it out announcing that the tooth fairy had already been there! The look on the clients face was priceless and my poor Tech was a giggling mess the rest of the day! |
