Are You In San Jose? Do you know people in San Jose?
If so... (maybe you can help me). I have been accepted to San Jose State's Masters in Information and Library Science program. http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/classes/exec.htm It is a great program because I can do most of my coursework online from SouthWestern Ontario where I live, work and raise my children. But I need to be on campus from July 22nd to August 11th which means that I need to find an affordable place to stay for the three weeks. If you have any suggestions please send me a private message. I am dedicated to my studies. I have been an Honours Student while working fulltime. Thank you for considering this request. Cheers - El Lamo

Man...what do you mean by 'affordable'? San Jose is incredibly expensive, to the point where people are shocked (I just left after over 30 years there). I can see about a hotel downtown that is pretty close to SJ State, you can hop the trolley, if you like but three weeks may run you around a grand or so. The YMCA on First Street in San Jose is a nice place and it is also on the trolley line and pretty close to San Jose State, you may want to check with them, not sure what they will charge.
In general you are going to what is considered one of the most expensive places to live in North America. There are good points though. You will be close to downtown and that is fun. The weather is absolutely fantastic, I miss that. You won't have to worry about girls because there are three guys for every girl in San Jose and two of those three guys make over $100,000 a year and the third is a criminal, he is the one who will get the girl. If this happened a year ago I'd have put you up for free but unfortunately a loss of job and an ill wife equaled a loss of income by about $100,000 a year and I just couldn't hang there anymore. By the way, $100k a year is lower middle class. Have fun and let me know if you have any questions about anything, I know the area realllllly well. |

I forgot to tell you, the reason you were not in the mix for girls is you will bee at San Jose State. That means the ugly girls will date guys at Santa Clara University and the good looking ones will date guys from Stanford....the girls that don't do either will date girls from UC Berkeley.

Hi MagicSanta,
I sent you a pm. Thanks for the info. Affordable to me is a concern. That is why I posted here. My annual income is substantially less than 100 grand. I am a serious student, married, non-smoker with kids now 9 and 13. One of the reasons that I chose San Jose was because I would only be a way from my family for a few weeks, since I can do most of my studies online. Thanks for your posting. It is a great start on my search! Cheers - El Lamo P.S. I am very sorry for your ill fortune of late and I hope that things will turn around for you. My thoughts are with you.

Are you only going to be in San Jose for the three weeks? I thought you would be moving there for a couple years. Let me know if you want me to check on the hotel but do check with the YMCA on First Street.

Smiles...
I checked with the Y. They do not have accomodations. The young woman doesn't remember them ever having space available. She said this is the same for all three San Jose YMCAs. My on campus time is from July 22nd to August 11th. I will not be bringing my wife or kids. Most rental accomdations want the full two months plus... A recommended hotel wanted $150.00 a night... both are not options. I will be searching CraigsList as well. If anyone else has any possibilities.... Cheers - El Lamo

Can you stay in a student residence? There should be vacancy during the time you will be there.

Let me check with my contact. I pay mucho less for a hotel room when I'm in town than $150 a night. The gal at the Y is full of it. The Rosicrutions are in San Jose, they have a museum. Let me check on the hotel and get back to you.

If you would like the contact for the IBM in San Jose let me know via PM. Out of curiosity what hotel wanted $150 a night? That isn't unusual for cost by the way. The place I'm checking isn't a great hotel but it is clean and you can be at State in a few minutes w/out a car.

I checked the sjsu website. If you are in for a conference, there are rooms in student housing for $35 per night. You should be able to land one of those, given your circumstances.

I don't know if he 'should' be able to get one but if he does that would be killer. Housing is a major problem for students in the area.

You are correct sir. In fact university and college housing is a great resource for those touring the country and looking for very low costing yet safe places to stay. The Bay Area is unique in a lot of ways though and they do a lot of things during the Summer in relation to high tech (San Jose being the basic center of Silicon Valley). I do hope it works out for him. I found a place that was willing to let him stay but he is in town while they are in New York so that was a no go.

I'll be there this weekend!
Neat thing about their museum. They purchased an esophoges (sp?) and had it for years. They finally got around to doing some research on it and when the university types opened it they found a mummy! No kidding, the people who had it never opened it because it was sealed and they didn't want to damage it and figured it was empty...so you go there and you can see the mummies! |

Magnus,
Student housing is not available during that period unless you are already housed there. Conference is also not available during that time period. I looked into both of these possibilities before posting here. However, I sincerely appreciate the time and research that you put into my request. Thanks again - El Lamo
