Okay, here's the deal I can envision the effect but want your input or references so I don't re-invent the universe.
3 Spectators on stage, each blindfolded and holding a pendulum..as still as possible...then I want the two of the pendulums to begin to sway..one more than the other and in the course of things for only one to be really swinging, thus eliminating the other two spectators. My plan...the one that doesn't really swing much..is straight up. The other two are on IT. I have two assistants that can be onstage while I "emcee" the process. Has anyone got ideas, experience or material reference on this kind of scenario?? Thanks

Sorry, just to try and understand...
In what context or why are the pendulums swinging? Blindfolded or not, pendulums "work" just the same and it's down to what you ask and tell the person holding it as to how and if it moves. Is using IT really necessary? It seems a little extravagent. |

Well yes it is. And in brief, the specs are "being used" by the audience to select a person and an object by concentrating on the one they want. So it is needful that the movement be pronounced and that the other diminish at the moment of 'concentration'.
The plotline is that the audience concentrates on the one they want...they all move some...then I ask them to really focus on the one that comes into thier mind...only 2 are moving...and now refine your thoughts again...only one. Hopefully that helps explain a little without I should spill the whole bit. Thanks!

Ah, I see.
Sorry, can't really help. I know a lot more about ideo-motor work than the kind of effect you're looking for here. Unless you can phrase what the audience is to concentrate on to be specific to the individual pendulum holders as required... Sounds good though |

Thanks Jon,
I appreciate your willingness to wade the waters of my imagination. If an idea comes to you...lemme know!

I've never tried IT on stage, but I would think all the stage lights would give it away. Then again, with this effect, I doubt the focus would be anywhere dangerous and people would be less likely to notice it.
If you wanted a crazy setup, you might be able to conceal some electromagnets in props, but I have no idea how practical or expensive that would be. Also, one pendulum would have to be plastic so that it wouldn't be affected, but then all of them wouldn't be moving at one point. Oh wait, there's also the risk of destroying their cell phones, watches, etc. Okay, trash that idea. If you used IT, did you plan on controlling it yourself? I'd assume you'd need some people backstage to control three pendulums at once. So far, that's simplest solution I've come up with: helpers hidden on either side of the stage. Hmm...I'll keep thinking. Terrick |

Actually, it looks like I read your question wrong and/or got too distracted at work to remember what you had said. Just ignore my last response.

Great plot, difficult task to do RELIABLY (Sam Dalal once wroye that happiness was an IT that never broke!).
Why not submit to Shane at Visions-Online and set it as a 'Proving the Impossible' challenge? (Then await the Masters of the Café here, and submit their solutions and win a prize ;-) )

No IT is necessary for what you wish to accomplish.
Simply have each volunteer concentrate on their pendulums and tell them that they'll start to swing in either a straight line or a circle. Odds are that two of them will have their pendulums swinging the same way, allowing you to retain the odd person out. Even if they are all swinging the same way, odds are that one of them will still be different than the others (either a clockwise circle versus two counterclockwise circles, or a N-S vertical swinging vs. the others swinging E-W). You'll always have a reason to politely dismiss the two of the volunteers, using pure psychology.

Yeah. It seems that the use of psy-op as opposed to gimmickry is the favored path. I will do some experimenting and see what happens. Thank you for all the input!

IT is not difficult to use for stage if you use the proper Page Martin song as your background music...

Also an excellent point.

If you could have them all three holding a single bar or rod with a pendulum hanging in front of each.....
The effect with the harmonics? The selected person is the one that is not moving... kay

I can admit to liking a lot of things about Copperfield, especially in his early days when it was about showmanship and not shattering world records. However, I have not now nor will I ever float a paper rose. Nor will I blow confetti all over the stage while pretending I wasn't born in the Northeast, all to the tune of Jurassic Park. Chris |

Although I don't think you really need it, there should be no problem using IT on stage, as long as your background is busy. You can always do a lighting run to see how it looks from out front.
Also, you only need a slight tug to get things going. Once that happens, the momentum should build. You can also give one spectator a little "help" with a nudge at the proper time. If you look away from that spectator and speak to one of the others at the same time, it should provide plenty of misdirection The possibility of using other methods of influencing a swinging object, especially one made of a ferrous substance, should not be ignored.

what a fantastic idea - kind of PK touches for a pendulum! Simple, foolproof, and $0 ! Thanks!
