For a casino I would NOT do anything with cards OR dice.
Here's why: you are going to be performing for the people who are there to GAMBLE. If they get even the smallest impression that there coule be cheating going on from the House side of the equation, those people will go somewhere ELSE to gamble - and that will NOT make for happy management. In fact, I would try to stay away from anything that's gambling related for the same reason, unless you can change the presentation so that it doesn't appear to be related to gambling, like a Chop Cup routine that isn't based on betting where the little ball might be... and I most certainly would NOT do Color Monte or Wild Card! But I MIGHT do a variation on them with my BUSINESS cards and not use a gambling themed presentation...! Remember, the guests want to feel secure that the House is HONEST! Having a magician showing them how easy it is to fool them with the tools that the House uses to take their money with is NOT such a good idea... But having rubbebands penetrate each other, or telling someone their middle name or figuring out which envelope has the Guest Pass to the VIP section (a special giveaway presentation for Bank Night) is a great way to IMPROVE customer relations through the use of magic... and that's what the manager is looking for... I betcha! Lee Darrow, C.H.

I agree with Jim Davis (from page 1 of this thread).
I think that would be fantastic to do in this situation... You could say something along the lines of "Is'nt it everybody's goal or dream to arrive with a few bucks and turn them into a few hundred or get a 100/1 odds and hit!" I mean the situation seems perfect for this effect and it is very strong! Also, if it were me I would be prepared to do something with a borrowed bill just in case since the bills used to perform Hundy500 are unexaminable. But that's just me and I love money effects, whether with borrowed money or bills/coins produced from my own pocket. But there are a lot of good suggestions here... good luck. GlenD

I gotta go with Danny and Lee on this one. I don't think tricks where you show how you can cheat / control cards are a wise choice for a casino. Lee has given good reasons why. I suspect the person considering hiring you would feel the same way.

From the casino point of view here is the deal. There are players who believe that those shuffle machines control the cards. That, and not the crappy way they play is the reason they lose. So what in the name of Aunt Fanny would posess anyone in a casino to let people think they can control cards? Let alone if they have a poker room. Then the idea is completly silly. The casino wants people to think there is NO WAY they can control cards! Your proposal is completly counter productive. Oh and I am not completly certain that an ace assembly is the strongest trick out there.

As I read the thread, I had my answer set. Combination Cull by Darwin Ortiz. Probably the most impressive trick I do. I've used it for a few years to sell myself to several venues. But the boys are right here, Cards may not be the way to go. If you get the job, I don't think there is anything wrong with cards, but for now. Do something else. Possibly something like a good torn and restored card with the casino cards. I rely on cards so much, that if I were in this situation, I might have to pass.

Are we kind of Cheating any ways???
If you where at the crap table and doing tricks with dice then I think that would be a different story. But you are the entertainer. Doing card tricks will make your magic stonger. Boy ,if Jimmy Grippo did that I don't think he would have a job in Vegas. |

Here's an idea, do one of your proven best close-up effects that you already know and can do well and don't over-analyze whether it's appropriate or not.

Although it is a very SIMPLE and old trick, The Haunted Key really gets great reactions for me. Also, Brother John Hamman's "Twins" is also a winner for me. I'm always asked to perform "the one with the brunettes and red heads" everywhere I go.

Take a piece of rope, his ring, do a simple Clifton Ring Move and BAM you are there. I have some great card effects, but it seems when I do this simple effect, it is more impressive.

Well good luck close-up. But do what you know inside and out. Don't try to do anything new. |

Effects that have gotten me casino gigs:
CMH. Hands down the killer effect for casino managers. Especially when you have THEM hold the rubber band. Sponge balls. At Empress Casino in Elgin, IL, this one got the "Eye in the Sky" camera guys to have the undercover security guy to ask me to "Do that again, for US!" During my audition. It was the two to the volunteer's hand that did it to them, of course. Again, a casino is trying to show the guests that the tables are "cheating free areas!" If you go in and show what a great card mechanic you are, you not only won't get the gig, you may well get blackballed FROM the casino! Just an additional thought on the topic... Lee Darrow, C.H.
