Hi all,
Just wondered what illusions you think are truly amazing...and what type of illusions you feel really wows modern (clued up) audiences? I'll start.... The first time I saw Lance Burton perform Osmosis I couldn't believe it...and it was only after several replays that it came to me (it was like that feeling of being fooled again like when I was a kid and I first took an interest in magic, which doesn't happen often anymore)! Copperfield's Laser - Again same thing happened! I also really like a good switch that you just don't see coming! Any video clips would be nice to see of your favourites! Sean |

I love the Elevator illusion Copperfield performed... just a great way to appear! I also think Origami fits in there. One that fooled laymen but also most magicians.

Great - But how do you think it would play to a modern day audience? The current ones that are used to sitting in front of the TV and not used to seeing "live" entertainment?? Or actually seeing it performed on TV in 2007? I suppose what I mean is the whole global conditioning of people being used to seeing the camera angle change every few seconds and being very snappy and short, keeping the modern day, impatient viewers attention! Don't get me wrong the job Hans does with this is truly exceptional, how do you guys think this would do today?

Sean, DC's "One" would likely fit your criteria for a stunning, deceptive and rapid illusion. Perfect opener in my opinion.

Matt nailed it for me as well. That was my all time baffler. I loved how Han's Moretti performed the box illusion. So creative and different.

Yes, Christopher, that is one LOVELY appearance by DC. I would love to do an appearance like this one. Moretti is an all-time classic, Matt.

Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Hans told me that the worst part of the "Box" is when the birds have gas.
Cheers!

Stanyon, I grew up in the country and raised all sorts of birds including chickens. I was worried about Hans for the chicken that was perched backward on his head. Chickens 'go' more frequently than doves and Hans was certainly not in a favorable position.

I actually helped push the swords in at a Han's performance years ago. It is a very strong illusion. I like the DC appearance also. But, I vote for The Mascot Moth. There is another thread about this. Doug Henning truly did a wonderful job with it in Merlin. See this link video.google.com

No question that Moretti's illusion is a flabbergaster. But it also shows something more important, some illusions like Osmosis can cost from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions. And do they really amaze the crowd that much, or much more than most other illusions. I think we forget how much non magicians are amazed at what we do. I've seen adults fall backwards over their chairs in amazement from just a simple spongeball routine. Moretti' certainly doesn't have hundreds of thousands invested in his illusion, just some good imagination and some solid magic principles. Being magicians who know how it is done we are often amazed at things that audiences are as amazed at as we are, compared to any other illusion. The one illusion I ever recall in my life that totally blew me away when I first saw it, was an old man who held this little birdcage in his hands, and he asked me to put my hands on it. Wham! it was gone from right between my own hands! Totally blew me away. Uncle Harry only got a chuckle out of my reaction. Now today I know well how this is done, so the amazement for me has vanished, but I still see the look on adults and kids faces when that birdcage suddenly disappears from between their own hands.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

I have always liked Hans's cardboard box and I remember how stunned I was the first time I saw it, I just wonder how it plays to modern audiences and how it rates on the spectacular side?
The Copperfield appearance, I am not too fond about, the clip is from his TV special and if it could look like that in real life it would of been awesome, but in his live show it doesn't look like that, the b%$e is much thicker and logically thinking by the laymen there is only one place he can come from....! Only my opinion (ok, and some laymen I asked how they thought it was done). I love Copperfield's metamorphosis, spectacular and amazing! |

Another DC classic is of course Voyeur, a lovely piece with startling cloth-work for both the vanish and reappearance. For me, although not mind blowing by any stretch, is DC's escape from Alcatraz. I have always loved that particular segment. It may have more to do with my fascination with prisons than anything else, but it always sticks out in my mind as a fave.
