Just another reason to get out of contracting, Magi: Last month I was at the lumberyard (no, not that one...I despise the Big Box stores) executing what I thought was good lifting form on an 85# sack of redi-mix, bringing sufficient upper body force to bear upon said sack to achieve altitude. Gravity and the sack conspired to successfully resist said force, redirecting same towards my vulnerably misaligned sacral region. I could've sworn I heard something rip just before the pain exploded...
What would have otherwise been an excellent reason for a layoff came at beginning of the busy season. Needless to say, doing Magic hurts a WHOLE lot less |

That's why I call the redi-mix company when we need concrete! But then, when you need 15 cubic yards of concrete, it's worth it!

Been there.
About three years ago, I was moving boxes of books. They averaged 45# each. I got to about the eighth one and "snap, crackle, pop." I was down for the count. I was down for the month, actually. And, with that, I'll say that I've not yet fully recovered. I've seen guys slug wheelbarrows full of wet concrete all day and never even pop a knuckle, while I've seen other guys put their back out moving a cup of sugar. Back injuries are weird, just weird.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Back pain sucks. I've never fully recovered from an injury.
Try to keep your arms tight to your body. I know, hugging a bag of concrete isn't the most normal looking thing, but those arms work like levers.

It's time to switch down to 60 pound bags.

Years ago I tried picking something up that was actually nailed to the floor. It was 3 weeks before I could stand up!

I used to glue coins to the floor in the Caféteria in college. It was comical watching people try to be sneaky about picking one up. They would try to kick it aside rather than just picking it up. I don't think anyone injured their back from attempting to pick them up.
