I have just got back from the Mayflower where Derren Brown was performing his stage show and wow!
This was absolutely amazing and one of the best experiences ever. His show was stunning, with some of the most amazing routines/performances I've ever seen and it was so much fun. He performed the most amazing book test I've ever come across, and his Q&A style routine was unbelievable, as were all the others. I don't really know why I'm posting this but I wanted to let everyone know just how good he is and to definitely go see his stage show if the opportunity ever arises. |

I was also at Southampton this eve, having seen him perform last month in pompey. It was very enjoyable both times, but unfortunately I had bad seats on both performances.
It is a great tour. However I think I would still rate the Something Wicked tour higher. |

What would you say was the stand out moment of the evening?
I was seated on the front row of the circle so had a great view of the stage etc, I ordered tickets as soon as I knew they were available. It was great seeing Derren live and being able to see his work for real. |

That sounds amazing! I wish he was coming to London but his website has no dates confirmed for the capital.
I'm just getting into book tests at the moment - Could you describe the conditions of the book test in the show just to whet my appetite? |

If you check Andy Nyman's website, he seems to let slip that the same thing is on the cards for the new show. DERREN BROWN: AN EVENING OF WONDERS Andy has again directed and co-written Derren's latest tour. This third live show is proving a hit with fans and is enjoying a sold-out house on it's national tour. The show will come into London's West End early next year. http://www.andynyman.com/news.htm Of course, I could be wrong. |

I too was at the MAYFLOWER last night. It was some of the most slickly presented effects I have ever seen.
Hats off to the man and all his advisors. I personally thought that this show was better presented than Something Wicked and definately more thought provoking. Thank you Derren. |

First to LauraCalder:
During the show he asked if anyone had with them a book/magazine/newspaper or something and if they did to start looking through and find a page. He continued on with the show and during the performance he ended up being blindfolded (well actually he had bandages wrapped around his eyes, head etc). Sometime during the performance he stopped what he was doing and asked if anyone had found a book/magazine/newspaper on them and have a page found. Out of those who had, a microphone was given to one of the random participants and then the following happened: He asked her to look at the top line of the page and to concentrate on the longest word, he then proceeded to reveal this word gradually, first stating that it has a double letter, then that it, in fact, had two double letters and began with an E, and finally that the word was eggshells. He was correct. He then began to reveal what the actual scene was about and this again was revealed to be correct by asking the lady to read out the line. Finally he asked her to close the book, and then he picked up on something else and revealed that there was a small picture of a herb at the top of the front cover, this was correct again. This was just a brief description but you get the idea. Here is a bit more info on the show: All throughout the show he would toss frisbees into the audience to select who would be the participants. Also an open invitation to the first 150 people was offered to take part in the Q&A style performance. This was to ensure there were no stooges etc, and to allow as many different people from all over the theatre as possible to get involved in the show. He gave someone in the audience a chance to win either £500 or £5000, all they had to do was pick which amount they thought was in a box that was brought on stage. He tossed a frisbee out and the person who caught it was asked three questions. Based on his answers, Derren brought out one of the two boxes (there were two boxes, one green and one blue. This box was left onstage in full view throughout the rest of the first half of the show). Derren now gave him the choice of what amount he thinks is in the box, of course while doing what he does best, attempting to influence the participant using suggestion etc., the person made his decision, but was told hw will have one chance to change his mind later on. The show continued and just before the end of the first half, he brought attention back to the box and asked the participant to stand and make his final decision, of course he was doing forms of suggestion throughout this. The participant changed his mind (he had first decided on £500) to £5000. This was now final and Derren promised throughout that if he gets it correct he can have the money. It was revealed to contain £500. I've given quite in-depth examples of two of the many great pieces, but my descriptions really can't do them justice as you really needed to be there But there was many more, from number divinations to card material (well, one card effect/routine), zodiac divinations, personal information reveals, a gorilla stealing a banana (really) and lots more. There was only one piece that I was not that keen on, though I still enjoyed it. This was a seance table levitation type thing. I liked the first phase where a table would move about etc., but the levitation part was not that convincing. Derren didn't try and play it off as real and in fact told a short story about a fraud whose methods he believes he can replicate and this is what he proceeded to do. So not too convincing but still good nevertheless, and I'm sure it shocked many. Overall I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the show and was amazed throughout. He truly is a master at what he does and brings it altogether into a funny, shocking and believable one-of-a-kind experience. (This is just my opinion so don't start brnging other acts into it, this is just what I believe and how I feel). |

I saw the show a month or so ago, and I also thouroughly enjoyed it.
My favourite piece of all was the phone bit, those who've seen it will know (I don't want to spoil it for those going to see it) I highly recommend the show, had great seats, front row, and was great to meet Derren. He's a true gent! |

I think due to being so far back in both performances, I felt less ingratiated in the performance than when I saw the Something Wicked tour.
I do think the Something tour had more of a variety of effects and the ending is probably the best kicker you will ever see. |

Hey Y2John, thanks for the details of the book test. It sounds confoundingly lovely.
I actually tried out an impromtu (and most definitely humble) book test tonight at a party that I've been pondering for a while and it went badly. (Well, I was three words off so it still made its mark). This kind of thing makes you realise how refined Derren's performances are...and realise that when you think you've got the skills perfected you're still years away from perfection. To be able to give all other petty pursuits up to be magnificent at one thing....oh! eek! |

Joking about what?
He psychologically was influencing the participants in certain performances throughout, including one time where, unbeknown to the participant, the thing Derren was going to influence onto the participant was shown on a huge screen behind. |

Put a gun to their head or offer them lots of cash you'll influence them alright...
Derren psychologically influenced you to believe he was psychologically influencing the audience... |

Whatever. I'm just giving my opinion and have not given it any deep thought on how the things were accomplished as I don't want to think about it that way.
Maybe stooges, instant stooges and technology were used to accomplish some of the performances, but I'm just saying the way it came across to me and I'm happy I was fooled and amazed. Anyway I don't want a thread I made to share my excitement about Derren Browns stage show to turn into an argument or debate about what's real or not and who knows what etc, lets just not worry about that and move on. |
