I am pleased to see Doug Brewer at the Café. I first heard of him through his lecture notes/booklet "High Impact Coin Magic." I was impressed. When his book "The Unexpected Visitor" came out, I was impressed again. It's a must-have for the coin worker.

When Doug's 1999 Video Lecture Notes were offered by Magic Smith, I was interested. I contacted Doug and found out I could order the video directly from him, and you may very well want to do the same.

When talking to Doug, he stressed that it was a lecture video, yet I found the video --although filmed at home--to be perfectly adequate as far as sound, picture quality, and clarity of instruction are concerned.

The first effect, "Sounds Familiar," is a coins across involving three English Pennies and a Chinese coin. Coupled with a gaff, this makes the routine relatively easy, shorter, and diverse, including a transformation at the climax.

Although I was not interested in his card work, "Triflection" was a promising, almost impromptu (you need two identical jokers) wild card effect that I plan to perform at the restaurant.

"Backhanded" is a strong reverse matrix effect using just one card. The routine features the ingenious use of sound, and showcases a very deceptive, rarely seen click pass.

I didn't care for the two prediction effects with cards that followed.

"The Three Coin Trick" is a clean (no extra coins, no gaffs), pure sleight-of-hand routine. This is a real worker that Doug used for years as an opener.

Doug closes with "Chopped Taters," his chop cup routine. The routine is compact, direct, and magical. It is very practical for the strolling performer.

You can tell from this tape that Doug is a worker. What do you do when you screw up the Himber click pass? Doug tells you. He also explains how to reset routines, and it's clear that his card routines are designed to reset, allowing him to approach a table and launch into any of several effects.

If you have mastered the material on "The Unexpected Visitor" this video may not offer much for you. But if you're new to coin magic, to Doug's magic, or are looking to see Doug's routines performed and taught, you'll be pleased with this reasonably priced video. Contact the Magic Smith or PM Doug for details.

I have to totally agree with you Darrin (except for the card tricks you didn't like, I on the other hand like them). Doug's material is direct and very magical. It seems like every time I meet up with Doug he shows me some new stuff that plays well and looks great. In fact, if you liked his notes High Impact Card/Coin Magic, the Lecture Video, or The Unexpected Visitor, you will pleased to know that Doug is working on another book due for release later this year . S. Segal --Is Doug's upcoming book the one that will feature his routines for the Dennis Loomis coin cup? I'm looking forward to it.

By the way, Doug mentioned something in the video concening the mini wild card routine "Triflection." The effect can be used to lead into a signed card to impossible location routine. Normally, a card is signed and returned to the deck, and all the heat is on, because nothing has happened yet.

By using "Triflection," there is less heat on the load to the pocket or wallet after the effect is supposedly over. I'm eager to try this at the restaurant.

You're right, Darrin, he does have a Coin Cup book due out early this year for the Loomis/Riser Coin Cup.

Aside from that, he has recently completed another book focusing on restaurant/walk around magic that he performs daily. This will be larger than The Unexpected Visitor and will contain both card and coin effects for the close up worker.
