I enjoyed my stay in Amsterdam. There were plenty of places where you could perform. I'd look up more of the touristy places like the Van Gogh museum or the outdoor flower market (forget the exact name but it's hard to miss) rather than try to busk near Cafés and in the Red Light District.

I was there in July and the weather was wonderful. It also seemed that a lot of other Europeans were there on holiday during July and August. I hope you have fun and I'm envious.

Hi guys,

I lived and worked in amsterdam for three years just doing magic.

you can busk in dam square, just make sure you talk to the guys who regularly perform there first....it was really wierd working the square and being stared at by a performing statue who was wearing a MASK movie green mask leering at me the whole time.

there are a number of Cafés and restaurants you can also work, however I don't want to say where they are, as I need my gigs when I go back!

but seriously, theres a great magic community in amsterdam, with many club bartenders doing magic also.

pmm me if you want some more info.

tot ziens (catch you later in dutch)

geoff.

Are the parks still populated at night with heroin addicts and homeless people?

Hi manal,

well yes, but you could say that for any major city in the world.

the fact is that holland has one of the lowest hard drug abuse and teen pregnancy rates in the world, so they must be doing something right. they also have one of the lowest rates of prison popualtions in the world.

dutch people are very hard working and really look down on drug addicts, even people who use soft drugs, most of whom are tourists.

regards,
geoff.

Hi guys,

these figures are from the european union body set up to monitor and survey hard drug use in europe, the EMCDDA.

While the figures for cannabis show that decriminalisation has not increased the rate of cannabis use any more than other countries, the figures for hard drugs are more striking still. As table 3 below shows, the Netherlands has one of the lowest rates of problematic hard-drug use in Europe, even allowing for methodological discrepancies. While this may be also due to other aspects of Dutch drug policy, to do with treating addicts and so on, the decriminalisation of cannabis is probably also partly responsible. (At least this is the view of the Dutch authorities). At the very least, it is obvious that the decriminalisation of cannabis did not cause the catastrophic increase in hard drug use which is sometimes claimed.
Table 3: Estimated number of problematic hard-drug users in EU countries [5]
Country

Number per 1000 inhabitants (range) [6]

Number per 1000 inhabitants (average)

Netherlands 2.4 – 2.8 2.6
Germany 2.7 – 3.5 3.1
Austria 3.0 – 3.4 3.2
Finland 3.1 – 4.1 3.6
Denmark 3.6 – 4.3 4.0
Ireland 2.6 – 5.8 ~4.2
France 3.9 – 4.8 4.3
Sweden 4.0 – 5.4 4.7
Spain 5.5 5.5
United Kingdom 6.4 – 7.0 6.7
Italy 7.5 – 8.2 7.8
Luxembourg 6.2 – 12.3 9.3

I haven't been to Amsterdam for many years. Last time I was there the public parks were havens for the homeless and addicts, admittedly the majority of them were foreingners.
I did not mean to imply Holland was anything other than a wonderfull and beautifull place.
The people are marvellous.

Hi manal,

yes I agree.....i wasn't having a go at you......

......i just get tired sometimes of people portraying amsterdam as a place where EVERYONE is wasted all the time. this is usually from people who have never visited.

I worked in a high class restaurant there and absolutely love the city. I would say to anyone who has negative ideas about amsterdam that they are probably wrong.

you really must go there to experience what a great, cosmopolitan city it is.

the drug scene is such a tiny part of the experience.

regards,

geoff.

No Danny, it's an animated dog and baby. Glad to straighten you out on this!

(My apologies BTW, I was hoping it was the actual video with their dialog. Not something fan-thing using that song!)

This is the best work place I have experienced in europe this trip.

warning there is no affordable housing.

I am forced to stay in a dorm with 16 beds......i hate it.

I'm used to my own room, but the work spot is so good I'm putting up with it for awhile.

You should have been aware that there would be no affordable housing.

If there were affordable housing, there wouldn't be an industry providing hostels for all the tourists who discover that there's no affordable housing.
