May I ask, would the exposure of a watch steal in the media warrant the same attention as exposing magic tricks?

thanks,

Not everyone knows how the tricks are done, but almost everyone knows how time can be lost...

I have not seen any genuine stage pickpocket exposes, but I would personally not be so bothered by it as I am with, for example, the exposure of thumb tips by Penn & Teller, or in the movie Night at the Museum. Even if someone saw the m.o. of a watch steal, he is still prey to good misdirection during the show. Its not the M.O. that does it in pickpocketing but the misdirection.
