I'm seriously considering splurging on these seemingly high quality shells, but I don't want to make such a big purchase without your insight. what do you guys think about these shells?

I'm either considering those or black foxes scarab shells. those look like real quality ones to.

I have the LaM shells and I really like them. Even with small hands they're
easy to handle. Haven't had the need to look at any others. |

Brian,
I have several sets of shells. I had a set of La Maggiore shells also SFS shells and Black Fox Scarabs. Having said that I sold the La Maggiore Shells and still have and use my SFS shells and Scarabs most of the time. that is not to say the LaMaggiore Shells are not good or a quality item. I just prefer both the SFS Shells and Scarabs. To me the SFS and Scarabs work effortlessly while the La Maggiore shells worked well I had to work harder to be comfortable with them (that is just me). The La Maggiore are rather large shells, not necessairly a bad thing just a fact. Right now I am looking to purchase a set of Copper SFS shells used and no one seems to want to part with them.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

I had both...I now use only SFS street shells.
If you get the LM shells you will not be making a mistake. They are wonderful. I found I just used the street shells more. When life caused me to part with my shell game stuff I only replaced the street shells. I like the chanin dip and a few other little details that make them work for me easier. You can adapt the LM shells for extra features but I would be very hesitant to alter something so expensive. This is just my opinion...if someone else posts the LM shells are better for them I would believe them also. They are very nice shells. |

I think the L.M shell are very very good. I also have the S.F.S. set but like the larger L.M shells. It's all a matter of taste larger shells maynot be right for you. I don't think you can go wrong buying either sets.

I too started with La Maggiore. That is, until I got my hands on the SfS shells. Now they just look pretty on my shelf.
They handle smoothly, but don't have the "Chanin Dip" feature of the SfS shells. It's simply a matter of preference. They can easily be sanded to suit. I had to be more careful not to flash the pea due to the larger size. The SfS shells were much easier in that regard. If you like bigger but not huge, the Black Fox shells look more like traditional walnuts but are sized somewhere between the SfS and LM shells. If you have a dealer nearby that carries both, definitely see if you can do some comparison shopping first.

Correction:
I haven't handled them personally but I've been told that the Black Fox shells are pretty much the same size as La Maggiore. He recarved the shells to suit his own taste, and according to the images I saw they're still nice shells, but they're not exactly *between* the two sizes. In regards to flashing, it's not that big a deal once you learn how to handle the shells. It's simply that since your fingers are naturally farther apart due to the larger size, I had some trouble at first adjusting to keeping my thumb and second finger pinched together and I didn't have quite as close a "cover" with my index finger as what you get with smaller shells. I'll repeat what I said earlier. If you can get your hands on more than one set, please do so. It really comes down to personal preference and no amount of online suggestions can tell you for sure which one you will like better. My favorite right now? I have a set of a limited run of "Shagbark Hickory" shells that are not on the market yet. They are smaller than SfS and handle like a dream. The only downside is the unique look doesn't have that feeling of familiarity you get with standard walnuts.

I find the LaMaggiore Shells gorgeous, but a bit big for my hands. I have rather stubby "sausage fingers", and find the LaM. shells uncomfortable to use. I like the size of the cheapie "Vernet" shells. I'd love to find a set of the LaM. quality in the Vernet size. I'd also like to find a set of the Karl Norman metal shells, or the Al Cohen turned brass "Thimble Rig", if anyone has a spare set around that they'd part with for a reasonable price.

Dave is right, the La Maggiore shells are probably the largest shells out there, but Black Fox are not much smaller. I have been "collecting" shells for a couple of years, and have both La Maggiore and 4 sets from Black Fox. Scarabs, turtleshells and "natural" walnuts. All of these lack the Chanin-dip, exept the latest set of "natural walnuts" from Black Fox.
It is my impression that they therefore works best on a mat. I like, and use them all. However I don't use the peas that come with the Black Fox shells. I much prefer the "Perfect peas" from school for scoundrels. La Maggiore is delivered with these. Bjørn

I use Black fox master walnut shells on a day to day basis. They will work on any surface.
When I know I will have a mat I use Bob Swadling's classy looking chrome caps, (for want of a better word.) I use Whit Haydn's perfect Pea in all cases. A few months ago Black fox said he was working on slightly smaller scarabs with a chanin dip. Can't wait! Andy
