I have always used the traditional set of Scotch & Soda. I've been thinking about trying the magnetic set. What is the good and bad of the magnetic set of Scotch & Soda?

Hi Jerry,
I have a magnetic Scotch & Soda and a regular Scotch & Soda. The major advantage of the magnetic version, IMHO, is that you don't need the bang ring to separate the magnetic version. I carry a cigarette lighter in my pocket and can place the magnetic S&S against it, then pull the sections apart. It's very convenient. Regards, Steve

Steve,
Who made your Magnetic Scotch & Soda? Do you perfer the magnetic over the non-magnetic? Best, Close-up |

I think the coin is less examinable. The gap is obvious when the insert is in place. Not that I would encourage examination of the coin - just something that I see and bothers me. If you have a good routine and you don't let the spectator look at the half dollar too closely, the magnetic feature is a great trade off.

I don't own a magnetic set, but I have handled one. In my opinion, the advantage of not needing a bang-ring doesn't overcome the fact that the locking version is much more examinable. They both have their respective advantages though...

Thanks for the info Steve. When you put them into a hand, does it just jump together? If the magnetic coin gets near metal will the person notice?

I read somewhere where a magician working at a magic shop demo-ed Scotch and Soda for a Customer. The guy did the standard routine. The customer left without making a purchase. When the magician attempted to demo it again he discovered that the customer had kept the gimmicked coin and switched it for a regular half.

Hi All,
Here are my replies to several of the above posts: close-up: I actually prefer my magnetic version (it's from Tango). Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/magnetic-s......ency=USD Rich and Jimmy: I must respectfully disagree with your views regarding how examinable are the coins. Perhaps it is just my sets, but the seam of my magnetic version is nearly invisible. I cannot say the same for my standard version (I do not recall the manufacturer... I've had it for some years). As Rich states, I do not allow my volunteer to get a very long look, although it has stood up to some fairly good scrutiny on a few occasions. ivfour: The gimmick does not "jump together" as you asked. If you are paing VERY close attention, you MIGHT notice some VERY slight movement when the [ is placed on the coin, but the little "jump" looks more like two coins sliding around on the palm more than anything out of the ordinary. Since the gaff is magnetic, you do need to take care not to allow it to get too close to other ferrous (magnetic-attracting) metals. I have not encountered this problem to date. Regards, Steve

Steve, thanks!
Standard version - has the noise or clap sometimes and the pushing of the volunteer's hand to make sure it goes together. Oh!, the bang ring has to be done in the next room. Magnetic version - slight movement or pull and maybe the look of the coin. I think I will give it a try. Jerry

Magnetic every time. I do not hold with the idea that the magnetic version is not examinable - I use Eddie Gibson ones that are so realistic I have spent them! As well as being easier to separate there are many more effects you can use them for.

Hi ivfour,
No special patter, just the standard "bet you a Scotch & Soda" bit. Regards, Steve

Other things with the magnetic S&S are disappearing coin under glass ( a bit of a bar-room pleaser), coin thru' paper cup on spectators hand, coin into balloon (part of a longer routine with a 'restless' 1p coin) but there are tons of routines out there.

Hi dantheman2192,
There are several versions available from different manufacturers. Here's an example: http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/dime-penny......691.html I don't have any experience with any of the versions, so I cannot comment on the quality of the gaffs. I hope this helps. Regards, Steve

Yachanin, you're right, the examinablity of the coin is NOT a big deal. It's just a personal bug a boo I have. I like things to look as good as they can, and the magnetic S&S I got from Precision Magic doesn't look as good as my Johnson (coin).
For different Ideas on how to use your S&S: Go to a local magic shop (if there still is one in your neigborhood) or search on line... there's a booklet with 50 (or is it 100) tricks w/ scotch and soda. You can also do a search here on the Café... There's one routine that uses a cheap ashtray and flash paper that's a really killer idea... anyone know the one I mean?
