What shows are on the air now that you feel have gone past their prime, or expiration date, as the case may be. Another term for this is "Jumping the Shark".
One example of this is ER. As far as I know, it's still on. Does anyone watch or even care about it anymore? When do you think it went stale?

I think that the original series of Law and Order is getting tired. The plot twists are getting just plain strange. I am wondering if after 17 years if it isn't just plain finished.

All of them as far as I'm concerned. I haven't watched a comercial TV show in years.

You really ought to see http://jumptheshark.com/index.jspa
I watched every Law and Order, every version, avidly, until just this last couple of episodes of EACH VERSION, which all seemed more like soap operas. |

I haven't watched Law & Order for quite some time. It lost a lot of its spunk when Jerry Orbach left the original show and then died. It's been on for 17 years? Hard to believe. Some of its siblings have also been on for too long. If it weren't for the competition from CSI, these shows would have been cancelled a long time ago.
While I still like CSI: Miami, I think the original CSI is getting a little long in the tooth. Knowing that they don't always get their forensics right doesn't help. I'm glad that Stargate SG-1 is ending. The series had been taken about as far as it could go. It's best for a series to end while on top of its game. Another show that was on that died due to being on too long was Murder She Wrote.

'The Simpsons' has definitely lost its edge.

I like NCIS although I acknowledge that the mystery itself is less interesting than the family quabbles that go on with Jethro and Co. while they're trying to solve it!

Ok, I'm stumped. Where in the world does the metaphor of "jumping the shark" come from?

John,
"jumping the shark" comes from an episode of "Happy Days" when Fonzie had to do that very thing when he was in California (I think). Everyone watching thought that was the moment when the writers had ran out of ideas. Tom

The story of the creator of the "Jump the Shark" phrase and the website http://www.jumptheshark.com is a very cool one.
He, John Hein, created the web site wrote a book, and sold the website to TV guide for several million dollars. He now co-hosts a radio show on Sirius radio for Howard Stern. He's a rich nerd. |
