I love Kevin James...but who wouldn't. However, I was very suprised to see Anthony Reed get cut. His water metamorphisis was outstanding and I think it would have been a smart move for the show to let two great magicians duke it out.
My 2 cents, Dorian

Doesn't america vote at the end?
if your in the US make sure that you phone and vote as many times as possible for KJ. one other thing why does KJ need a million dollars? he is already selling his own inventions and is a regular performer on WGM. I am rooting for him bc it is about time that a magician wins a competition of some sort. daniel |

How did bruce block do?

Bruce did not make it through. They showed him getting a phone call from his assistant at the last minute who was backing out of the audition. Bruce "put together something quickly", three hat monte, "find the Rabbi". He didn't make it through when the acts were narrowed down to 35. Kevin and Anthony were in the 35, and when the cut was made to 20, Kevin moved on. I have a feeling Anthony had a prior engagement booked out of the country, so he really didn't lose, he went to work. It'd be great if Kevin went a long way in the competition. It's not about the million, it's about the recognition he truly deserves. But I'm sure the million would come in handy.

With the movie like the Prestige out, I think it would have been a good build for publicity to have 2 magicians battling it out...they missed that opportunity.

What happened today (July 17, 2007)?
I have to agree with Piers. And an experienced magician like Kevin blew the illusion, and the judges and the audience were able to "see" through the illusion. A magician's nightmare...
To believe is Magic.

That disembodied hand thing thing is sold, around Halloween, in stores. He probably shouldn't have used it as the centerpiece of his performance. Still it was a little classless of Piers to bust him on it.
There was a clip of his previous performance tonight showing the legless character walking around on his/her hands. This was edited from the telecast when the performance originally aired. And it was probably a good thing. Seeing the half person completely independent of any apparatus kinda' tips it, in my mind, anyway. |

I cringed.I really thought the hand thing was a throwaway gag that was a precursor to a huge thing, like the appearance of a whole person.
I am perplexed. KJ is such a talented innovator, and I was really rooting for him to make it to the finals. But what the heck? It was as if he decided he didn't want to move on. As for Piers class level, I don't like the guy either, but it's not his job to protect magic secrets. It's the job of the performer to not be so transparent and hokey that everyone in the audience is left with a dumbfounded look. Look, I hate to be some armchair wanna be. I wanted Kevin to win the thing. But I guess that part of being an innovator is taking risks. Too bad this one obviously wasn't ready for prime time and most likely cost him advancement. Even Springer was fumbling on how to say something good - "if you're a Kevin James fan and want to see WHAT ELSE he has planned" - not exact quote, but the meaning. Sharon even asked politely "are you saving the best for last?" I doubt he'll get the chance to follow through. |

I cringed as well watching Kevin James get killed with his illusion. Very unlikely that he is going through to the next round but at least he tried

I thought it was a horrible performance
I mean the PERFORMANCE was good but the effect (i thought....sucked) because nowadays its SOOOOOO obvious what hes doing or it could have been autmechanic or something like that I was expecting a big finish like a piece by piece production of someone form the arm ill be voting for him though EVERYONE please at least try to vote for him

Kevin's performance was an absolute nightmare. As an experienced stage/parlour performer, I was waiting on the climax, the kicker, the big finish. I was actually upset - I thought the judges had killed the trick before it was over. But nope - he was done! Unbelievable. There is no way that Kevin got input on this illusion from any magician worth his salt. It just wasn't good. period. And then to hear the judge reveal the secret of how it worked. I felt bad for Kevin - he just had this dumbfounded look on this face. I was watching it with my (non-magician) Dad, and he goes "what was that? that wasn't even magic..." ouch.

Ok, Kevin James "Jumped the shark" with that performance and will most likely not be moving on (unfortunately).
It almost seemed like he substituted this effect as if his real illusion did not arrive. At the end of his performance, Hasselhoff even said "that's it?" We all were expecting some spectacular conclusion that just didn't happen. The magic performance crashed and burned. Very unfair for such a tremendous magician. |

I'm not making excuses for Kevin, because I, too, thought there was going to be more to his set, but these shows were taped in LA, not Las Vegas. The last audition round was taped in Las Vegas, so it was a matter of driving over to a different theater with his cast and equipment. The commitments Kevin has in his Las Vegas show, and the taping schedule, may have been a deciding factor for the material he choose for the show. He headlines the show at the Greek Isles and may not have been able to accomplish what Nathan Burton did last year. (Read the article about Nathan's hectic schedule in Magic last year) I guess he could have done the floating rose or any other "packs small plays big" material, but he may have been trying to stay with the "body part" theme from the last round. Anyways, I hope he gets voted through and is able to perform his signature pieces. I'll be voting for him.

It was a bummer to see a great magician have a crash and burn onstage, but seriously... Have any of us never had that experience. I personally remember having a smart azz teenager yell out, "there are two cards" during a double lift and the intense desire to kill hime right there on the spot. I have seen Kevin's show and I think he has so much stuff that is better and has a greater impact. Perhaps he had a bad day. Perhaps, something malfunctioned backstage and he had to do a last minute effect substitution... There are a lot of things that could have happened that we are not aware of. I did, however absolutely feel his pain as the judges ripped him up (justifiably so probably) and I RESPECT his professionalism for not getting his chainsaw and doing an impromptu sawed in hald effect on Piers.

I DON'T like Piers--but come on----every ten year old kid knows how the hand trick works---maybe Kevin decided to blow off the show---somethings strange about this deal--he is smarter than that---IMHO-----cheers!---Jimeuax

I too thought Keven had not had time to finish his act when in fact it was over. I think any of us who know of Kevin and his reputation for inventiveness were caught off guard by his use of such a simple and fairly well distributed Halloween prop. I just hope that somehow he manages to make it to another round.

But we all know he is better than that routine. I'd like to see him make it to the next round although it would surprise me if he does. |
