Slim, many will tell you that you can cause permenant damage, ruin people for life, cause lasting scars, and really screw up peoples lives in general.
I however am not one of those people.

Ormond McGill was performing in Canada. He had hypnotized a young girl and had given her a cue word to go back under. On getting home, her boyfriend gave her the cue and she apparently went under. They took her to a hospital. Now in the next city Ormond was preparing to go to bed in a motel when the RCMP knocked on his door. "Are you Ormond McGill (actually Dr. Zomb)?" Yes. Come with us, we have a young girl in a trance that you hypnotized and we can't awaken her"
When they got to the hospital the girl was awake and was fine. The next day though, the newspapers in Canada proclaimed the event in headlines. Now at the next performance, when his introduction was made, some of the people at the candy counter who heard it tranced out. This might have been the first newpaper headline induction! Now that is how I heard it directly from Ormond. |

Trance! More like in a Galaxy Far Far Away. How many double shots had Ormond had when he told you that one?

Ormond did not drink. This is just one of my first posts and I am astonished at the hostility in this forum.

Many hypnotists have used the "can't get out of trance" story. It ranks up there with the vanishing hitchhiker.

WW,
I think you missed the point of the topic. Where's the 'damage?' Except maybe to the box of JuJu bees dropped when the candy counter girl 'fell asleep'? Don't get me wrong, it's a great story - in fact I plan on using it if I ever get interviewed for the paper before a show- but there's no sense that anyone was perminently changed for the worse. Maybe you should consider moving your post to the "how to create personal legends" topic under metalism... |

Trance- One of TWO things and only TWO things can happen when in trance. You will either A.) Wake-up or B.) Fall into a deep nighttime sleep. There are no other options. The "had to go to the hospital" and be awoken was recently claimed in a lawsuit against a stage hypnotist here in the states. That is the craziest thing I have heard, since few doctors understand or do hypnosis (including psychiatrists) so how would THEY have the ability to awaken someone from trance? If a person won't open the eyes at the conclusion - blow lightly but firmly on the eyelids and watch them pop open. (although it could be the onion breath that awakens them) LOL.

Short term, one CAN sometimes run across a phobia during a routine and that can cause a rather bad reaction in someone - SHORT TERM. They panic and run, usually.
To the audience's view, this is NOT nice, pleasant or a Good Thing and is easily misinterpreted. In some cases, a phobic reaction CAN lead to catatonic withdrawal, but I have yet to see any properly DOCUMENTED case of this happening at a stage hypnosis show, anywhere. However, this is a good reason to Know What You Are Doing when you work with people. Lee Darrow, C.H.

I know of one hypnotist who let their subject go without removing the suggestions. She was a famous sexy srtipper and went around asking people if they wanted her autograph.
She continued all the way home asking strangers if they wanted her autograph. Her concerned partner took her to hospital where she continued with the doctors and nurses. The police tracked down the hypnotist in the early hours of the morning. He terminated the suggestions by phone... This is apparently a true story. I have also bumped into ex volunteers months after the show and heard of an ex volunteer responding to music that was used in the show a week after. Their friends had arranged to try it at a party. They said he went straight back into trance. I have also had friends tell me of someone behaving really strangely in a bar while on holiday when certain music was played. Everyone in the pub reckoned she had been to a hypnosis show earlier in another bar and had left without having the suggestions removed... I think it is more than possible and likely they are correct... |

I think it is more than possible and likely they are correct... I think it is much LESS likely to be true than true. In fact, I doubt ANY of these stories.... The stuff urban legends are made of. The nature of post-hypnotic suggestions on stage is such that WITHIN the theatre there is enormous social pressure to perform to the crowds expectations. The exact opposite is true after the show and outside the theatre. The social pressure is NOT to do these things. Although hypnotic trance facilitates a stage show, it is actually the social pressure and internal desire of the participants to please that creates a show. I have always said, I can get 10 people out of 100 to act silly onstage WITHOUT hypnosis, and the reason is simple: They WANT to perform, hear clapping, and have fun. However, after the show, people WANT to be socially acceptable, and dancing whenever they hear the word "blue' is NOT what people do in real life.... In additon these, "doctors and nurses" who are able to wake people up or remove post-hypnotic suggestions are FICTIONAL. Doctors and nurses (even psychiatrists) have less trianing in hypnosis that the average new age magazine reader, NGH member, or typical magician (which may or may not be much). Why they would possess the skills to "de-hypnotize" someone or deal with abreaction when they don't even know anything about hypnosis is beyond me. I bet these profoundly great "doctors and nurses" are creations of ASCH. LOL Also, police dealing with a case of psychiatric distress are NOT going to call a stage hypnotist on a phone in the middle of the night. They are going to follow a protacol, and its NOT having "mystical powers" create a chant on a telephone.... Sorry mindpusher, but these stories just aren't true. it's NOT they way hypnosis worls.....

Well nonguard the hospital story made the news at the time.
I don't rule anything out. Of course as stage hypnotists we have vested interest in claiming there is no danger. Although I agree with you mostly I still think there is a possibility. Words can cause huge amounts of long lasting emotional damage without hypnosis. I don't see why its not possible within it.. Posted: Jun 26, 2007 7:49pm As for doctors being able to deal with hypnosis. I have a friend she is a consultant surgeon. She is in charge of an Accident and Emergency hospital. She will leave the room if I bring out a pack of tarot cards. Freaks out and is terrified to check my pulse when I "stop it". Her friend a senior nurse took my pulse then freaked out. If you tell her there is a spider in the room she won't come into the room for hours. Infact theres a good chance she will burst into tears. Nothing would surprise me about doctors and calling the hypnotist wouldn't surprise me either. I once saw a famous Irish hypnotist end his show with a runaway lepracorn. He didn't terminate the suggestions. Walking along the busy road after the show there were still a couple of people chasing and petting their lepracorns and one partner was quite concerned. I also once saw a very extreme hypnotist do a late night show. He would end by stripping the volunteers completely naked then send them back to their seats with not a stich on. This particular theatre has three levels. To get to the top level you have to go outside into the busy street round the corner to access the steps. I saw a couple of them come back to their seats at the top level. They had to go into the street naked. My own personal experience is that there are a small percentage of people in any large audience who do not want to be on stage but end up there anyway. They can't resist it they are so suggestable. I have witnessed it many times where people do not want to be on stage but end up on stage because they can't resist suggestion. Everyday life there are anchors naturally set up in our environment that trigger feelings of happiness or deep despair. Many times we don't even know what they are. I don't buy into these clear cut simplistic views of hypnosis that are obviously highly motivated to benefit stage hypnotists. Ive seen to many instances where that just isn't true. I was a fulltime stage hypnotist for nearly 10 years. I have over 18 years experience with hypnosis. And I don't agree. |

Not to be a cynic, but if you were a full time stage hypnotist for 10 years, give us your name so we can verify some things. Where or who did you train under? Where did you perform? It seems after 10 years, you would be pretty well known. Tell us who you are MP!!! Until then, I call BS!!!
If you were indeed a full time worker, I feel you would have a more solid take and a better grasp on some of this work. Just when I think you are beginning to come around, there you go again! I'm not attacking you, I'm just a man who wants to know. Best, Jerome Finley.
