What is the name of the trick that Rick Thomas uses in the beginning of his dove act? Here is the video:

It's called the Phoenix Fire Cage. You can obtain it from one of two sources:
Richard Hughes made the cage that Rick Thomas uses: http://www.hughesmagic.com/catalog/misc/doveeffects.html Fairchild Magic also makes a similar cage: http://www.fairchildmagic.com/My_Homepage_Files/Page31.html Best, Chris |

DJ, how do you know the dove is poor? It might be the wealthiest bird alive.

The Richard Hughes Cage has been highly modified for Rick Thomas. The current cage by Richard does not use fire, it uses Flash Strobes.

That's good news. It's always nice when they get along with each other.

Actually I just saw "Dirty Jobs" that covered Lance Burton's bird clean up guy. The doves didn't look wealthy, just healthy.

That's an old clip but the birds can afford a cleaning service so they have more money than me

Thanks for the Tilford link.
It shows the size next the performer.

The Tilford one looks too big if you ask me.
I saw Rick Thomas version recently and he may be using flash strobes also, but he definitely used fire when I saw him... Howard's is the original but I think the fairchild magic one is more deceptive. Steven |

The cage that Rick uses is nowhere near the apparent size of the Tilford photo. His can be held by one hand. The vid of Rick performing the effect shows the size exactly.

Thanks for feedback. I would have judged the size wrongly without it.

I have a Tilford/Fairchild version and it is bigger than Richard Hughes version and it can be held with one hand from the ring, two from the base. Check the ad copy for exact size.
I have met Richard and have seen his also and it is definitely smaller. James Adamson

Hi !
I had a tilford/fairchild cage but I sold it after one year because I thought it was really big for just one dove to appear...It's really a great prop !!! Has someone the richard Hughes version ? What's the difference in size? regards allan |

The Hughes version is about 65 to 70% the size of the Fairchild/Tilford and uses 2 strobe lights instead of a flame.

I have been using the Fairchild cage for about a year. It NEVER fails to get a great crowd response! It is heavy though, that's no lie. But I love it - push button magic at its best. LOL

If someone sends me a regular email, I would be happy to send them a comparison size photo.
Rick has modified his cage. He does use fire. It no longer has a flash in it after ten years of working every night. I am also working on another model but I will not be adding any fire to any of the cages. Just too much liability. There are less than 6 of my cage in existence at this writing. Richard
