Just wanna share a story.....
I've been playing with mesika's floating ring for a couple of weeks. I tried it on a walk around gig two weeks ago. I did it with my own ring (after ring thing). The reactions were great. When I was just about to leave a kid came up to me and asked I he could see the floating ring because he heard everybody talk about it and he didn't saw it. Al my stuff was in my case all ready, so I asked to borrow a ring, then did the routine. The reactions were incredible, it really freaked people out, I mean seriously! Tried it on a friend later that day(who is quite keen at figuring out things, because he saw me peform many times) and he went to the roof! Today I had a walk aroung gig and did it again (two times actually, when the conditions were right): this is a real miracle to laypeople! This is in the supernatural league! Awsome! It was the talk of the party. "that guy let my ring hover in the air!" I tend to stay away from floating effects normally, because I find the solution obvious (just my opinion...) But this is incredible. I think the key is to let the ring float for just a second, maybe even less. Will always have a **** on my hand from now on! Just wanna let you know, I haven't had so much fun with an effect for ages! Simon |

Glad to hear of your very positive experience! Thise are the good times in magic, for sure!
If you can do a few things with a borrowed ring and then finish off with the floating effect, it is just great. About as good as it gets. GlenD

As I said, I tend to stay away from invisible thread (except for spooked) but this effect is so amazing, I changed my point of view somewhat.
Pick up a copy of Animated miracles, this effect is just worth the price of the manuscript, really. Just try it for yourself. Hope you have as much fun with it as I do! Simon |

Yeah, I agree and have that book.
So far, I only perform the floating ring, card and bill (some of the bill handling is from Losander dvd). Also Losander has some good stuff on his dvd's. GlenD

I am getting great reactions from H.P.
Is the ring trick taught in his A.M. book? |

I truly believe we're kidding ourselves if we think our audiences aren't going to think this is done with the aid of thread. I think Michael Close has said ask your Audience how they think it's done and be prepared to be disappointed.
If there was a method to float the ring horizontally then this would stand a fighting chance of combatting that perception |

If you float anything, everybody is bound to believe it uses a ITs. That's why M.A.'s version of the Floating Bill is specifically designed to "disprove" that assumption. See C.R. Vol. 1.

Also if you have a copy of absolute magic, Derren Brown has a wonderful Floating ring routine hidden away in there... If you don't own this book already... buy it!!! I can't recommend it enough.

I think it's very hard to figure out how that can be acomplished by threads, I didn't get that when I first saw it. This works disarming. Nobody mentioned threads, I'm serious. People came up te me begging to explain this, befcause they were afraid of losing sleep over it. I don't know why, perhaps people don't think or mention thread because they feel that solution is to obvious, who knows? Rolled up sleeves, (or even a t-shirt or even nothing at all ;-)) and empty hands, a borrowed ring : this too works very disarming. Try it yourself. Simon |

Marcus, maybe wait a little while, I think most of these high prices are the laity searching for something they won't find.

Hi Simon and mescalitoeyes. Simon, you make a fair point and maybe I would feel different if I saw you're presentation. Some news for you which you may be interested in.
Mescalitoeyes mentioned a floating ring effect in Derren Brown's Absolute Magic. I managed to borrow a copy and read through the effect in question. It reads beautifully and I'm sure is a moving experience to witness it. The key difference is that the ring floats horizontally. I managed to track the effect down. Derren mentions Terry Lunceford as the originator and this is his website in case either of you want to look at it. http://www.ontheedgeofreality.com Just click on product list and scroll down to 'The floating finger ring' I cannont find any reviews on the Café for this effect. Perhaps it's one of those hidden gems?? Take care Mark |

Thanks for the info on Animated Miracles Simon......I just ordered it. I have been a little leary about IT work. Ive done some, but not consistently...this seems like a great effect that I can get behind.
Take care, Dorian

Terry Luncefords floating ring is great but you ALSO get his three ring routine, which is one of the best and most overlooked ring routines around. Highly recommended!

If all I was concerned about is finding effects that I think audiences will not be able to figure out, I would remain paralyzed and not do anything. Once I know how something works, I have to try real hard not to be so focused on not being discovered that I end up screaming the method that I am trying desperately to hide. The way an effect is presented, handled and performed can all be worked out, usually through repeated performances, in such a way that the method is extremely well disguised or the effect performed so entertainingly that it doesn't matter. In either case, did I achieve entertainment value to those watching or in some cases maybe even amazement. Now if you perform a given effect more than a few times, assuming you make adjustments along the way, and it still bombs or ends up being figured out or whatever, then maybe you drop it. But even then it still doesn't mean that someone else doing the same effect will experience the same bad responses.
I disagree with the notion that everyone will know how it's done (using thread). I have done the floating card effect, presented in my own way, and gotten people to back up and practically scream. That only happened a couple of times but typically I get good reactions. The same thing with the floating ring. The way I present it is with a little comedy. I do some ring flight stuff like what Gregory Wilson goes over on his videos or maybe some stuff with a rubberband and the ring before I go into the floating ring bit. I distract them with laughter and a few humorous lines about their ring feeling a little light or possibly being a carat or two short from what the dealer may have said just before I float it (only for a moment and at the right time) and as they are just starting to laugh all the sudden it changes to a gasp as they see it there between my hands in mid-air. I think the emotional misdirection sidetracks them just enough to take the heat off trying to figure it out and it's only floating for a second or 2. I don't go waltzing around with their ring floating between my hands and showing it to everybody I can find. It's for the eyes only of those paying attention and into the whole presentation. Disagree with me if you want and choose not to do any loop effects, I am fine with that. It works for me. GlenD

Hey marcus001 - good call on the source in absolute magic, forgot that the load came from that different vid. like you say, I think the effect is so nice because it just doesn't start floating, it's starts moving a tiny bit and tied in with a powerful story which gives it the reason for moving.

Hi Matt,
I don't think there is a video available on the net. I do know that he performs it at the end of the videotape where he explains his floating glasses. It's a promotion video for his book animated miracles. Simon |
