This is one of my only rope tricks, but I think it might be the best of them.
Gimmick---> Well, the gimmick wasn't what I was expecting at all. When I opened this up and read the instructions, I was a little confused, but after I saw the gimmick, I knew exactly how to use it. The gimmick is quite unique, I haven't seen anything else like it. I was a little paranoid that the gimmick would be noticable, but if you handle the rope like you would a regular rope, your spectators wont suspect a thing. I also thought the "other" gimmick would be annoying, but it is unnoticalbe to you throughout the whole day. Instructions---> The instructions are your basic 1 packet trick piece of paper with the most limited instructions available. There is a DVD for this trick, but I do not have it. ------------ All in all, this is a great trick. I have even adapted it to pass through my neck and a spectators body. I was awake all night trying to come up with a way to get it to pass through a spectator. I am going to be performing this at my upcoming parlour act in December, so I will let you all know how it goes. If you are into parlour/stage magic, this is a great and fun buy! Mitchell

I've had one of these for years. I love all the comedy you can get out of it by goofing around with the rope and the volunteers until you do the effect.

I have & like this too...
However, because you cannot open both hands & let the rope drop openly to the floor at the conclusion..I had PAVEL custom-make me a MAGNETIC version of "Hang em High"..allowing me to openly show the entire length of rope at the conclusion, w/o hiding anything (rope cannot be examined or tugged on at the start) I have also experimented using an examinable UNgimmicked piece of rope (actually a rope with the core removed). I wear a box-cutter type blade on my belt behind me - allowing me to set-up the rope...but you have to trade the good part of having the rope examined at the start - for the bad part of not having the rope examined at the conclusion. Anybody have pros/cons comparing this to the CHAIN version? It's examined both before and after the effect. The only con I can come up with is the sheer weight of the chain....this stuff is NOT light! But, on the pro side, when that chain hits the floor with a good solid "CLUNK" at the conclusion of the penetration, that's pretty good!

I performed Hang em High for a number of years and had great success with it. The lack of examination at the conclusion was not an issue. The only reason I stopped was cause the gimmick came out ot the rope and I could never get it back in so that it looked good. Then I got the chain version. Now this is one heavy prop to carry around so I don't perform it very often. But it is so totally examinable both before and after it passed through you body. And yes I do love that solid clunk when it hits the floor.

Steve,
I have them both and love them both. I have been doing the rope version for over 10 years and the chain version for a few years. The rope is much easier to transport but the fact that you can't let go of the rope at the end made me switch to the chain. The chain cannot be examined before or after the effect but it can be handled very freely and visually examined. The thud of the chain hitting the floor is also nice. Both get great reactions. While the chain is a little more of a pain to deal with given the 20lbs of weight, I like it slightly better because of the handling freedom. |

This is the piece of the thread I was talking about:
Believe it or not I toyed with this idea in the 90s. I had Hang Em High and loved it, but was curious if it could be built up into a magician fooler where they examine the rope and then you do it. I never came up with the exact solution that I thought was perfect, but I did play around with having either small scissors or a single edged blade attached to the back of one of the belt loops. Also, you can play around with the "rope melting" idea that's in Daryl's Rope DVDs. Good luck with it. I'm sure you'll fool a lot of the guys if you come up with the proper method. By the way, I give you my little subtlty: You point to the spot in the middle of the rope and talk about a tug of war and how they always have a little flag or marker right at the middle. You take out a large red decal and stick in the middle of the rope. You now ask for each guy's name and you write it on the tag and the date. You do the standard effect and when the piece penetrates it also has the tag and the names. How: You simply have another tag on the gimmick piece and you know the guys' names in advance so you also write that in with the date. As you can tell, I spent a lot of time playing around with this effect. I really loved the idea when I got it. Greg

IMO
There is no concern with this item not being examinable. If you are concerned, it is in your mind only. This is a comedy effect. Once you do it you put the rope away. Once you do it you've received and given the audience the value. Examining it is not part of the routine or what makes the audience enjoy it. John |

Examining it is not part of the routine or what makes the audience enjoy it. I fully agree. We sometimes over-think our methods. The audience wants to be entertained. With good patter and routining, they will move along at the pace of the show. I don't worry about examination, I simply ensure that I am clean at each segue. Now, when performing for other magicians... that's a totally different story!

A nice idea may be to perform the "Tenkai Rope-Thru-Neck" first - using the visible "Hang Em High" long rope (the gimmick holds the rope secure while doing this)
...THEN follow it up with the regular 'Hang Em High' (rope thru waist) routine. TWO penetration effects for the price of one! |

Kids or adults.... this is one trick people come up to me after shows and ask about....
Thanks for the tug of war-red flag idea Greg... Nice thinking... I don't think I would use the names of the guys and the date, but its a nice subtle touch and gives a little more meaning to spectators. hang em high rocks!! |

If you get a chance to see Bob in lecture he performs this and it's a gasper as far as audience reactions.

By the way, there's a version of this that uses a chain that simply rocks. You actually do the penetration and immediately drop the whole chain in front of you and all of it is together. It looks great.
