Hey Guys,
I've been working on a new-ish effect for about six months now. Before I try to sell it I would like some opinions on it. I know I may be loading a gun here but I need the criticism. Here is the general effect: It a completely re-done "Ring in Light Bulb" Ring in Light Bulb Extreme (summarized description) The magician borrows a ring from an audience member. He then makes some comedic remarks about the ring's quality. As he does he notices a few minor scratches. Being the courteous chap that he is, he offers to buff out the scratches with his polishing tool. While he attempts to repair the ring a series of bright sparks and shocks are seen coming from the golden edge of the rings body. As the audience cringes in their chairs the ring is seen to visibly vanish in a small burst of smoke and sparks. Almost as instantly as the ring vanishes the small table lamp across the stage is seen to flicker on and off and finally a burst of spark and smoke explode from the top of the lamp shade! The magician then goes over to check the situation, as he does he (bare handed) removes the light bulb from inside the lamp, is appears to be burnt out, this is obvious because of the severe burn marks and cracking along the bulb head. He carefully hands the bulb to the audience member who loaned the ring, she shakes the bulb and notices a rattling noise coming from inside. The magician gives her a small handkerchief so she may be able to break the bulb and examine its contents. As she does this, she looks through the broken glass and finds .. you guessed it.. her very own ring! Scratch free of course. So that's the basic routine, I should mention that everything is electronic and is built into the unit. And all is operated via remote control. Now I'm not trying to sell this yet, when I do I will put up a proper add on the Café' front page. I would like to know if you guys, being magicians and enthusiasts would consider purchasing something like this, if you like the premise, how much you'd be willing to pay (remember its all electronic- completely different than the various other ring in light bulbs on the market today) and etc. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I appreciate Any help or constructive criticism. cheers, chris |

Concept sounds great; the ring-in-lightbulb routines I've played with certainly don't offer this level of 'hits.'
Some will be dubious of electronics (too many failure issues); to others this technological aspect will hold appeal. Frankly, a lot depends on the item cost. At the risk of speaking on bahalf of others (I do buy A LOT of stuff, 75% of which I re-sell because I'm either disappointed or it's not my thing) It's not really about "what would you pay," but "am I willing to pay (that) for this." |

If you need any help, let me know. The effect sounds interesting, and is something I would be interested in, would want to know a little more for a price of $400 though!

Ok here is the full details:
- The light is completely self-contained on a very thin table top - Total weight is about 7 lbs. - Everything is built in ready to go, you provide nothing(just replacement batteries) - The remote is radio not infrared so you can operate it through a pocket - You will need to plug in the lamp, the cord supplied is about 8 ft. long - You will need some flash cotton for refills, although it does come with enough for several performances - Any ring can be used or anything small like a ring - This is a real lamp, which uses live electricity, with a real pyro-device built in - You can use any cloth - no devils hanks or egg style bags required - No crazy gimmicks or difficult procedures - After purchase your investment would be about 10 dollars (to replace batteries) - Does come with batteries to start - Comes with full routine and instructions and will eventually include a performance and explanation dvd If I may have left something out, please ask. I want you guys to know everything about it. cheers, chris |

Sounds good!
I think for a price tag like that though the product needs to be tried and tested and assured to work in performance situations, it is one thing making it work on your own in a workshop but would you be prepared to stake your career on it? If it has been fully tried and tested and you would stake your own reputation on it then great! Keep testing and get it out as soon as you are ready to be 'not the only one performing the effect'. Thanks Ben.
I have had a few other magicians use this effect and they liked it a lot. It's pretty foolproof. I am pretty confident magicians around the country would really enjoy it. It's unlike a lot of similar routines, and packs a big punch. |

Hi Agent86,
Have you considered something other than a "small handerkerchief" to use when the volunteer breaks the light bulb? It seems there may be a risk of the volunteer getting cut while breaking the bulb or searching through the broken pieces to find their ring. Regards, Steve

I have yes, I am considering a few other possible ways to do that. What are your thoughts?

I don't see a problem with a hankerchief. As long as it is large enough to cover then that's all that matters. Light bulbs break really easily under the slightest hit. If you are worried, add some fun. Give them industrial gloves, a hard helmet and luminous workers jacket, would make it entertaining. Tell them you are actually going to get them to some work, as you have been doing all the work all night. They aren't dressed appropriately, so you bring out a case with hard helmet, gloves, visor etc. Will really make the routine entertaining, and incredibly safe in an entertaining fashion

Haha chris that's a really funny idea. I don't think I could include those props in the unit but it would make a perfect routine idea in the instructions and on the dvd. If I have your permission of course. Of course you'll be credited on the written and dvd instructions.
keep em coming guys this is great. chris |

I wouldn't expect you to include those props, would make it INCREDIBLY heavy!!! Yes you have my permission, and again, if I can help in any way, let me know!

I have had and still do have this basic effect complete with remote control on the market for several years. Here is a link for it. Here is a link to it.
http://www.murphysmagic.com/s.nl/id.6832/.f?sc=16 My unit retails for $225.00 and has a similar routine to where the ring vanishes in a flash while cleaning it. Devin |

Hey Devin,
I've actually seen your version of this trick and I really like it a lot.I did not want to reproduce something that was already on the market. But I did put my own routine in, took a lot of time to build everything into the table top and have everything work off of a remote switch. The lamp has a built in pyrotechnic. There is no ring rattle built in like yours. I changed that as well, everything coincides with the vanish or the ring. My ring rattle is more of a ping sound effect, instead of shaking it to prove its in there, you hear it drop into the bulb from across the stage. The ring vanishes in a burst of sparks, the light flickers and the bulb visually explodes (you see the sparks and smoke) the light is removed bare handed and is shown to be burnt, from here it can be handed out to be broken or I can do it. I use no napkins or cloths even though a cloth/hank can be borrowed to allow someone else to break the bulb. I wanted to do something new, and wanted you to know that your effect was not the brain child of this one. I had been doing this particular version for several years and only came to know of yours within the last year. Either way, I believe both versions are amazing effects and deserve to be available to working professionals. |
