Wonderful information indeed. Even after doing magic for 10 years full time now, I can honestly say that I found some very good insight into Nicholas's tips.
Well done!
As magicians we create what onlookers call magic. If they truly believe in what we have created for them to witness then magic is real!!!

Mentalists lie more then Magicians.

What annoys me the most about lying magicians is that now, after 20 years in the business, I am starting to get gigs and fees I am quite proud of...and no one believes me!

Don't worry too much about them. They will be out of business soon enough. And if the "corporation" hires someone at that fee - they get what they deserve.

Tip #1:
Do not listen to magician. Swallow their advise and grow from there. Tip 2: Be flexible with your clients needs and budgets. Do not worry about what other magicians will think. THere is no winning with them Tip 3: Keep doing what you love and it will show! for the other 7 tips you should buy a magic marketing course! hehehe

"Tip 2:

Candin,
You are right, but for the corporate event planner when they say low budget they mean four figures and not low three figures! WINK Some are use to entertainers asking for 5- 6- 8-10 g's or more. Again, one should go with their market. FInd out what others charge in your area. For example in LA prices for private parties range from $200 ish to $1500 ish. When the show is sold on price usually the winning price usually is about $350 to $700 ish for private events. Corporate work in LA prices go for about $450 to $2500. PR stunts the work usually goes for about $5 to $10 g's a day :)

I tend to ignore the clients who say no and focus on those who say yes. I currenlty take about 20-30 calls per week and book in around 6-7 of those. A LOT of people tell me I am too expensive and complain.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is wise to have multiple sources of income and my sole source of income at the moment is from performing. That is why I am interested. I'm not Jay Sankey, so I can't produce 20 magic effects a year to sell to magicians nor do I have a marketing course to sell. What other sources of income are available then?

Just A little economics rant about this idea
"The easiest way to figure this out is to work backwards. Start with your expenses and total them up. Then determine how many shows you can do in a given month. Be realistic. Divide the two and you've got your cost of a show.". While this can be useful bear in mind this idea-cost does not determine price but rather price determines costs. The price you can get for any product does not depend on what you spend on it but rather the value the consumer places on it. One application of this idea, which I find many disagree with, is that a show across the street should command the same price as one 100 miles away. Rather than worry about expense one needs to be concerned with perceived value. Gil Scott |

Gil Scott - Indeed you are most correct! Figure out the MOST you can get for your show and charge that much.

A lot of magicians would not be where they are today if they tried to followed all those ideas. It would have scared a lot people away because it is so strong. Maybe some people would have been slick and skipped around certain tips. To me those tips blend in more for students in a college magic class. Imagine a person wanting to be a magician. If he had those 10 rules in front of him, he would have started the rountine, but gave up if he kept trying to push through the barricades. Nicholas, don't get me wrong, I am not putting down your intelligent ideas. Even though it would of scared some people away, but some would have followed your plan and made success. To make it stronger for those looking forward to become a magician your ideas should be placed in a book. It will help a lot of people relax if there were chapters to follow explaining each step. It would help keep from scarring away people by just reading the 10 tips. It might be the number one book of becoming a magician on the market. You ever thought about writing a book on the subject?, you could be sitting on a gold mine. |
