When I started there was no permit garbage, but you still had to stake your clam to a spot. this permit thing may help you in the long run. as you can't be bullied out of your spot.
Do you know any of the buskers buy you? get to know them as these are the people you will be working with on a day to day. see I any one will share a spot with you. REMEMBER that you are asking for them to give up money, as your show is in there spot and the crowd that tips you could have tipped them. when juggling I will swap out so I can rest and clean up. Fire is messy. but I am no where close to SF. good luck, heavy hats!

As of right now I'm going to take everything step by step in my preperations. First off I'm going to build my self a poacher pouch. When I'm finished ill keep you guys updated and post some pictures on it. If I have any trouble stiching of making the poacher's pouch ill ask. I'm gonna check out other pouch people have made here. If you think there is one that standsout for you or me please link it or pm me. Thanks guy for the help

Please let me know when you will be performing sans permit, permission, or the spot being assigned, I want to watch the reactions.

MagicSanta when you perform do you have a permit? Im assuming you live in sf or know it. If so which part of sf do you need a permit to perform. I don't think you need a permit for the wharf.

If you are going to perform in San Francisco on the streets you need a permit. Can't get more clear than that. Something isn't getting through to you. They control who can and cannot perform there and I don't want to see you get hassled by the cops or smacked around by a performer who finds you tapping their edge. Stick with Gaddy, if he is willing to mentor let him do it because that is the best way to go.

Gaddy told me you don't need a permit to busk on the wharf. So I'm not really sure now. Not really sure about permits with other places. I'll ask my local magic shop when I get the chance.

Try to get a permit just to be safe
this table might be good for you http://www.theambitiouscard.com/aitem.cfm?itemid=11 pretty cheap....for a table of that nature then for a stand there is: http://www.instawares.com/walnut-moulded.......0.7.htm are you strapped for cash at all?? of course read what the others said...they probably give better advice than I do
Been a busker since I was 14 from San Diego; Don Driver was my mentor along with many others like Jimmy Talksalot, Sleeveless (Stephen Sloan), Bob Elliott.

Since my magic makers wand will split when I bang on it. Im going to make the gazzo style wand. A few questions on it. is this the type of eletrical type gazzo uses? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stor......00069964
As for the stick I saw a post saying this Pro-Mark "Rock Knocker" was the one gazzo uses. So I'm going to serch the music store for that kind. If I cant find it ill just get any stick that is rounded at the end. I'm hoping 13 inches is long enough.altough the one on magic ptich is 15 inches long. Im assuming that's how long a drum stick is. If theres anything wrong with this or something better please don't hesitate to let me know |

For the streets you need a permit. May be different on private property such as the wharf but the last time I checked those were spots where auditions were done and the workers are assigned times and spots. If you are insistant on going there then do so, I don't have to pay your bail so no skin off my nose.

OK, I've looked into the reality of permits in SF.
I was pretty sure you don't need a permit to busk in SF. But technically you DO need one. ***IF*** (and apparently ONLY if) you advertise your show 4 hours or more in advance. Also, technically you can't "erect a table" either. Odd huh? SF has one of the landmark busking 1st. amendment rulings in the USA- but unfortunately I forget the details right now. (Does Mr. Bill Palmer know, off hand?) http://www.municode.com/Resources/gatewa......mp;sid=5 I don't have one, anyhow. Jerry Salizar doesn't have one (30 years street performing) I don't know for sure, but I imagine the 50 or so living statues or the breakdancing thugs on fisherman's wharf don't have them either for that matter... People don't get busted for busking in SF on public property unless they are blocking a public way or something like that- also, recently one of the beat cops on the wharf is hassling people using amps (a no-no). I don't perform there, and I don't use an amp, so... I DID get a citation for running a tour without a license once, so the reality is that you CAN get a ticket, but that only happened because a particularly uncooperative neighbor complained (hey, it's not MY fault they live in a notoriously, famously, historically, Haunted House...) hope the above resource helps clear the air on this matter. Have fun legally (CAVEAT: I'm no lawyer, though!) busking on the public streets and parks of SF!

We use to have to get permits to work the streets regardless, this was a number of years ago so they may have lightened up. San Francisco is a very odd city.

Yeah..what everyone else said! Especially SeaDawg...Here's my opinion..study the Cellini Dvd's in your free time..and if you can't get em' right now then go ahead and get a peice of green fleece from Walmart (and also upholstry nails). Get a black bag from the car seat organizer or the woman's purse section at Walmart while your at it...then go stop by some place that has 1/4" ply wood and carpet padding and get yourself a nice 2x2 pre-cut peice of plywood. Stop by Toys R Us or a musicians store and by a cheap keyboard stand. Next go home and take that peice of board and set it ontop of the keyboard stand..and figure out what size you like the best. Go ahead and borrow a circular saw (hopefully someone you knows has one) and cut the tabletop to your preferred size. You will now take a pair of sissors and cut that 2x2 section of carpet padding you bought and cut it to match your wood. Spray some "adhesive" spray on the wood and the carpet padding and position the carpet padding accordingly. Now take that green fleece material (you bought a yard) and cover the padding and the wood with it ( if you've sprayed the edges of the wood and the padding with adhesive spray it works easier)..now flip the whole peice over and take a pair of siccors and trim the excess. Take some duck tape (black, red , or whatever color and cover the bair wood. You can now take the upholstry nails and put them around the edges. Use a knife to cut belt holes in the bag you chose for the buskers pouch. Throw your drum stick wand, some cups and a deck of cards in the bag and go to meet Gaddy wherever he is with your tabletop and keyboardstand under your arms.If you don't want to carry them then you can get a compact folding dolly from staples and put your pouch and all your stuff on that for roaming those S.F. hills. Use whatever cups and balls you can use (make em..Danny Hustle just posted some good info about making cups and balls) until you start making some money and then Look Mad Jake up for his cups and look Frank Starsini up for his pouch and buskers table I'm sure you'll figure out the best size balls once you get out there and try whatever you currently are working with out. ..Good luck Mate!
here and now

Amon thanks for all the help..
Ok guys heres my plan on making the gazzo style wand. Please tell me what you guys think. the stick I'm going to use http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product......u=449445 15 inches might be a little long I think. So I might saw off a little or sand it off. Bill what do you think is a good distance for the stick? Then I'm going to wrap the eletrical tape over it once. Once might be ok but I am planning on wrapping it with 2 layers of tape. How many layers do you guys think it should be? I'll keep you guys updated on my progess... Thanks for all the help |

Use two layers. Start two inches from the end. Wrap to the end and reverse directions wrapping the full length of the stick. Reverse directions again and wrap once more until you reach the spot from where you started; two inches from the end. This insures there are no open "tails" of tape on either end of the stick and if you're careful with your wrapping you'll see a nice diamond pattern develop on your second wrap.
I used a full length Vic Firth Timbale stick for mine and it worked fine. If you don't cut it, you'll have a nicely finished rounded end already varnished. If you do this a lot and break a stick, the less prep work the better to make replacements in a hurry. These are the ones I used, simply because they were available. The ones you chose are an inch shorter so you'll do fine with them just as they are. http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product......00076269

I've used both types of stick. Unless you are going to do the wand spin, leave the length alone. If you do the wand spin, you might want to cut it to a length that fits your arm. If you have long arms, 15 or 16 inches is fine. Shorter arms, you might want to go to 12 inches. Once you saw it off, use a rasp and some sandpaper to round off the end where you cut it off. Then wrap it as Dave suggests.
Sometimes I will put a couple of layers of tape over each end before I start wrapping the sticks. There are lots of possibilities. Do what makes you happy.

Gaddy:
I don't know the status of the law in San Francisco. So much of the First Amendment right to perform on public property depends on the public part of that statement. If any of the Wharf is private property, the whole First Amendment thing goes out the window. I assume, though, since there are so many buskers there, it is probably public property. It's all a matter of etiquette. If you block someone's entrance, that's a no-no. In Houston we have a new ordinance that forces the homeless to stay away from people who don't want to be accosted by them. It's a keep your distance ordinance. I don't know if it has been enforced or if it is enforceable.

Ah. I see what you mean, Bill. I know there's a case that went all the way to the supreme court that started in SF. I'll do a little more research and get back to everyone.
