Don't worry about it, not starting at 13 will not retard you as a magician. Many top magicians didn't do their first professional shows until they were adults. Some kids get heavy involved in magic and spend all their time focusing on it. Some Adults have the means to support their kids in it, and then there is the occassional prodigy. Don't sweat it, just keep practicing and bide ur time, it isn't when you get in , it is how good of a performer you are when you get in that counts.

Exactly. It doesn't matter how old one is when they start performing.
The main thing is to have fun and enjoy what you're doing. Practice and perform for others whenever the opportunity presents itself. In no time, you can start doing small shows yourself. Don't worry about what others do. Just do what works for you. Good luck. Mark. |

I started when I was twelve. Learn a few tricks and get them down perfect. Quality is much better than quantity. Just show them around to people and get attention.

I started when I was 10. I didn't do my first "show" until I was 12. For some people it takes longer to learn, practice, and perfect. Just take your time, learn and perfect a few tricks, show them to some people, then go from there.

I'm soon to be 14 and I have been performing in front of large audiences scene I was 5. However I am just now getting to a full illusion show now. If you did the math, that is 9 years of working on technique, showmanship, and all that jazz, that we love so much. Practice as long as you’re still having fun. I do have an assistant, who is also soon to be 14. We practice all the time. Our rule of thumb is PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. We’re young. We still have to go to school. Get an education. Magic is something will help you through that because it takes discipline, time management, and responsibility. Keep your head up and remember practice, enjoy life, and live.

Hi,
don't worry about starting too late or about being "more of a beginner than you thought". As with everything else, not everyone develops or learns at the same speed or at the same age. I never picked up my first magic "trick" until I was grown, married and had two children, I was already 27 at the time and I don't feel it has affected me in a negative way. Start slow, learn all your basics, join a youth group in your area -- if you don't know of one send an e-mail to bravesjann@comcast.net and let Jann W. Goodsell know that you are looking for a group in your area, she is the Society of young Magicians Director and she is also a Past National President of the Society of American Magicians. Feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to help. Keep a dream in the making Maria Ibanez National President Society of American Magicians |

I had the priviledge of juding the contest at SAM this year. One contestant ( I will try to spell his name but will probably get it incorrect) Chaniti from Japan asked us if we knew how old he was. I guessed the highest at 62. He was 72! he did not start magic until he was 62 and had retired as a professional portrait artist.
The important thing is the learn the right way and study the craft. The rest will happen on it's own. Richard

It's never too late ! I began performing for friends and birthdays at 10, but took a loooong hiatus to seek a career in professional music. Then, many years later, I settled down and started a family. When my 7 year old son asked me about the magic he kept reading about in Harry Potter (he is a very advanced reader !), I dug out my old tricks and we began practicing. The next thing I knew, I was being coached by a local pro, spent two years obsessively practicing and creating an act, and now I am working professionally ! I wanted to do this decades ago, but sometimes life requires that some things be put on hold. I am so glad I came back ! AS Harry Potter says....."I love magic !"

Bayman, I wouldn't worry too much. I'm almost 18, I only started about 7 or eight months ago, and the only "show" I've done was at my school's art show...they had painted a mural of a circus on a wall and also created a gigantic paper machet elephant, and they figured they'd stick me back there as the side show! It wasn't a huge big deal show, but it was still fun and great practice. Maybe you could look into doing something like that some time. The one major thing to remember is everyone is different and therefore everyone's magic is different improves at its own pace. Don't compare yourself to other kids. Just give it your all!
Are you watching closely?
