I didn't know where to put this so I decided to put it here.
I have this effect and I think it's pretty amazing, but I can't think of any presentational ideas to use it. I think the "hey look, I have knives that change colors" isn't very strong and kind of screams gimmick. I was thinking of using a story about how I got out of a traffic ticket by proving that the cop was color blind and I think this would work well in a formal situation, but I'm still thinking of something for table hopping situations. Do any of you have any presentational tips on this? Thanks in advance. |

Bill Malone: best routine.

Thanks Justin for the link, but I already have a pair of knives, is there anything there that you can suggest to help me develop a new patter?
TKE are you refering to Bill Malone's routine from On the Loose? If so that is the routine I do, however Malone patter is exactly "I have some knives that change colors". |

Robert, it sounds as though you have the skeleton of a good idea. How far have you gone with it? Do you have any basic routine to base your story on? It seems to me that you run the risk of not fully exploring your promising idea if you get too far into someone else's routine.
Perhaps what you can do to start is perform the Malone routine, but at each phase say something from your conversation with the traffic cop. Some phases of the routine will fit, some will need to be moved and you'll have to start looking for othes. Bit by bit, you will probably develop a good, fun routine. Good luck John

Robert I don't carbon copy his exact words...for example I don't bring out the knives the same way as him. and the part where he offers them $100 if they tell him the color of the knife I don't do. Like magnus said I used his routine as a skeleton or template. The moves or phases are the same but I word it differently to fit my particular style.
I'm not famliar with many other routines but I know a few people that love the Malone routine. I mean, you reveal the gimmick to them at one point and they even get to touch/examine the knives while following the routine. that's what makes it so strong in my opinion |

Why do the coins travel from one hand to the other?
because its magic |

I think coins travel from hand to hand because it's practical. Everyone is familar with coin money, so they know they're not gimmicked and their small enough to fit in the hands and use multiples.
Knives I'm not sure are as practical. I don't know many people that carry pocket knives. I'm sure some still do, but they are not as common as other magic props (such as money). From what I heard pocket knives used to be more popular so when a magician whipped out his pocket knife it was like he was performing impromptu, but the use of pocket knives has declined. Change the color of a knife seems very arbitrary. I think performing with sponge balls I can get away with it simply being magic, because a sponge ball is such a foreign object to spectators it's almost comical, but I can't find anything comical or a connect knives with magic. Maybe I could use it as a pseudo demonstration of the power of suggestion? It only appears to change color........ |

You might try just a simple story line about how when you were younger your grandfather used to do a trick with some knives.

When I was in the Navy, I had the sharpest knife on the ship. (I was a Boatswain mate) And I used to make side money making other shipmates knives sharp. So, I would tell a story about my experience with knives and mention that since my Navy days, I've been collecting them since. I collect knives from all over the world; as a matter of fact I just got back from...
You know what I'm saying? Something along those lines would seem logical to me. |

I don't understand what youre saying. but I do know there are tons props in magic that are in magic that are as common as coins but as strange as washers (sankeys holy moly). I think sometimes we think too deeply into the reasons for having such things. well...we're magicians. we carry rope, silk, sponge balls, hot rods, and color changing knives. but...if you cant make them fit your particular style, then that's another story. |

I like Justin's thoughts and I was thinking in that same direction..."Have you ever noticed that things seem like they have a mind of their own...computers seem to do whatever they want, whenever they want and so forth...then you could talk about a couple of your favorite knives that are in your collection, and you found that each one has a personality of it's own...have both black and white in one hand, if I take out the black knife and place it in my other hand, then the two knives seem to get jealous and switch places, you do that a couple of times...then put one in your pocket, you end up with one knife and then the they switch places right before the people's eyes...or something along those lines...
Something to think about... |

Thanks guys, a lot of interesting ideas and it definatly has me thinking.
I like the grandfather trick. I like power of suggestion. I like the idea of knives doing it on their own. I think one of the hardest things in magic is to make sense of what we do. I don't perform rope magic, but if I did it would probably take me a while for me to think of something that makes sense. I think I'm getting a lot closer to performing the knife routine. Thanks. More ideas are welcomed. |

Knives not common anymore??? I use knives everyday in my work and I am an IT consultant. I also know many other people that carry knives with them. Sometimes I even use my color changing knives to open boxes.
Knives are still very common. I would be willing to bet that most people at least own a knife. |

They are nowhere near as common as they used to be.
