Ok so quick question. I like the idea of calling the manager and setting up an appointment. Here's the problem. So you call and get the manager on the phone. Tell him you want to an appointment and he ask what its about? I have found from experience that if you say "performing magic in your restaurant" you're more than likely going to hear No. What is the best thing to say in this situation? How can you get an appointment

Getting an appointment is not a problem. Getting him / her interested is the problem for many.
Get his / her attention first. What is it that would interest him? A magic show? I don't think so! But if you can show him how to increase his profits or get more crowd to his place, he /she would be interested. How? A magic show he has never seen before. This would only work if the act can pull crowds. Hope this helps. |

Thanks James. I understand that I must show him a way to improve his business. But I'm asking over the phone how to do this. I don't want to sell over the phone, I know that mostly never happens. But making the appointment does happen over the phone. Whenever I try to make an appointment they basically ask me what for. I tell them magic and its a no I have no time.

Don't mention anything about magic. Just let him know how you can improve his business and to do so you just need a few minutes of his time. And you can't show him over the phone. This usually works. It works for me all the time. Try it and let us know how it goes.

Don't call walk in. Most of these places are grouped together anyways hit a few the same week and ask when is good to make an appointment. Spend a day booking interviews then go back a second time. It is human nature that people will be less likely to say no to you in person.

I agree with James. Don't mention magic at all. Just tell them you'd like to talk to them about increasing their business and profits.
Managers are always trying to find new, or unique, ways to do this. If they ask how, tell them you'll be glad to explain it when you get there! Good luck. Mark. |

THanks guys. I have read a few post where people don't agree with just walking in. They think its rude. Others say call and make an appointment. Any thoughts on that?

I agree. I would always call and set up an appointment. Why? That way when you go in, they're already interested, and you have their complete and undivided attention.

Be careful about what you say, because you more than likely cannot increase his business or profit. But what you can do is keep people happy and entertained while they wait and increase the good experience his patrons will have.

This is from my lecture in Nashville about how to get a job in a restaurant:
1 Eat at the Restaurant !! 2 Go at an off time (2-5 pm) alone! 3 Talk to the Waiter 4 Find out about the place 5 Ask the waiter to get the General Manager, Tell him/her you want to let the boss know how good they are doing. 6 Compliment the manager's store 7 Ask about special nights (family night) [that you already know about] Tell him how you can help. 8 Ask if you can do a free 1 hour Demo set a date and time 9 Make sure GM will be in house @ Demo Day of the Demo: 10 Go to tables and tell them why your there 11 Get people to cheer you on!!! 12 Stop after an hour!! 13 sit down with GM and talk about price 14 Seal the deal with a handshake 15 Offer to finish the night at the agreed price minus the Free Demo Hour. 16 Show up next week 17 Repeat step 16

Mark pretty well nails it.
GO OFF HOURS, 2-5 is time that managers and owners take deliveries, and accept perks from sales people. Often a happy time. Tony has said what I have preached for years. I have taken so many arrows I am tired but lets just put it like this it is sales 101. "Under promise, and over produce". My recomendation is as Jeff said, WALK IN. During those hours. Meat reps, credit card reps, all walk in instead of on the phone. Just do it. Take a sales course. Xerox PSS is a great course, it will help tremendously.

Okay, but it doesn't sound like you've got much of a plan. Make sure you know exactly what your pitch is going to be. Go back and re-read everything I sent you in the PM a week or so ago. It's going to be very important that you've got a strategy to make the sell to the manager or whoever it is. Congrats on getting the meeting and best of luck landing the gig.

Wow you had better put together a sales pitch prior to getting the appointment.
Oh wait, too late. Well you have some time, put a good pitch together. I don't mean "want to watch me demo magic", I mean a genuine sales pitch. Then here is a fantastic idea for you, REHERSE THE THING! Most guys will benifit if they save the money on their next 10 tricks and books, and buy a simple book on sales strategy.

"Under promise, and over [deliver]." Also known as "Mr. Scot's Ploy."
"Scotty," long-suffering Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, was often asked by Kirk to deliver impossibly difficult repairs under grueling circumstances. Scotty would always question whether such a thing was even possible, but he'd do his best...though it would surely require a week of relentless toil. Then Scotty would flip the job in 48 hours or less, looking like a miracle man in the process. Kirk's typical asssessment? "Mr. Scot, you're a genius!" Good stuff as usual, Magi -- thanks for sharing your help here. Leland |

When it comes to restaurant work, I’m not a beginner. I been contracted by other magicians to work there restaurants for years now. I just haven’t found my own. When it comes to a sale pitch, not too late. I'm not some 13 year old kid who plans on walking into a restaurant and showing the manager my coins across and expect a job. I'm not that naive. I know how to talk to a customer and have been working in the business for some time now. I just haven’t had the time, with college, sports and working for others to find my own. Hopefully this will go well.
