Hi-
After watching magic on TV and the very occasional live performance, I decided that I wanted to learn how to do some of the effects that I had seen. I retired last year and have, at last, the time to devote to learning. My main intrest at this time is card effects and other things that can be done close up. I don't see any type of professional performance in my future, but would like to entertain at gatherings of my friends and possibly some type of volunteer entertainment at hospitals or nursing homes. I have already learned some things here that have helped in planning my "performance", such as keeping a journal to record practice sessions, routine set up, notes on what works and what doesn't, and ideas for the future. Hope to be able to contribute in the future, but at this stage of the game, I am in the low end of the learning curve. I am very glad to have found this site-it is a wonderful resource. Thanks--Ken (in the mountains of West Tennessee) |

Ken,
I'm also trying to learn magic at an older age. It's a lot of fun. I have similar goals of trying to get good at close up magic (with a special interest in card magic) and entertain a few friends and family. As you alreay know, this is a great web site to learn from fellow magicians. I use the search function a lot. If you get a chance, try to visit a local magic club (like an IBM Ring). I haven't gotten up the nerve to perform in front of other magicians yet, but I am learning a lot and would recommend it. Anyway, welcome! We're glad you joined us. Lynn |

Ken,
I am also retired but have been doing close up 30+ years. I always carry magic stuff with me for quick tricks. Over the years I have narrowed it down to a thumb tip, half dollar size coin, english penny, color changing knife, hot rod, and usually a set of coins like copper/silver, copper/silver/brass. These are all good, fairly easy, and can be used for different effects (thumb tip is a must!). You can get all these with inst. at any good dealer. I like Tannens or Madhatter out of Col. SC. For cards, I like Trost, H. Lorayne, Garcia, and Curry are my favorites or any of the early Marlo. For more info write me. |
