Hello everyone,
I am trying to put together a short card routine and have hit a small bump in the effort. I am looking for an effect which would logically allow me to gather the aces in the course of production, so I can move directly into the next effect which requires the aces to be at the top of the deck. The problem isn't getting them to the top-it is gathering them in a natural manner so they can be moved. I don't care for the pause after one effect to shuffle through the deck and move cards to set up for the next effect. To me, it doesn't look natural. I have three effects which use the aces and work great at the end of the routine, otherwise I would just open with them starting with a set up deck. I hope this is reasonably clear and Thanks in advance for any ideas. Ken |

I'm not sure I completely understand the 'gather the aces in the course of production' part but I'll make an effort on my assumptions that you want to do this from a shuffled deck.
Any effect where you need to remove certain cards from a shuffled deck should work fine. The idea would be to cull the aces from a face up spread as you remove the other cards. A Oil & Water trick, Dingle's "Too Many Cards", sandwich tricks or others that either don't use the aces or perhaps just one ace. Cull as you search. Not knowing your effects, and if the deck is yours and not shuffled, why not presetting the aces? Depending on the situation I suppose you could have the aces in you lap and add them later when the audience is relaxed. |

Jaz-You got the drift of what I was asking even though I didn't explain it well. I will be using my deck and will be doing any shuffling that might be done, it would seem the best answer would be just to control the aces in a group until I need to move them to the top of the deck.
What I plan to do in the routine is: 1- Triumph (a classy effect and totally surprising to any non-magician ) 2- A quick Pick-a-Card using a backslip force and the reveal using the technique described in the RRTCM effect The Twenty-Sixth card. I like this because of the surprise and unusual reveal. 3-XXXXX-this is the spot that I would like to insert something that would allow me to unobtrusively move the aces to the top of the deck setting up for 4- A Poker Players Picnic, another RRTCM effect which ends up giving me the four aces and letting me move into 5- Twisting the Aces then 6- Dr Daleys closer. As a final effect 7- Queens, Out of Control, which has its own cards in a special packet. I know that most of these are not new, but as I will be performing them before a group that are not magicians, they will be new to them. The overall theme to the routine will be about who or what is controlling the outcome of the effect--the magician or the cards ( I am not all that great at humor, so I am trying to come up with something "middle of the road", that will still involve the spectator ) At any rate--thank you for your advice and input. It is easy for a beginner ( of which I very much am ) to miss some of the obvious solutions. Tony2514--thank you for your link to the Ace production thread. Between the information there and what Jaz has offered, I am sure I can make this work. Ken |

Your welcome.
I used to do an effect where four cards were selected and returned to the deck all at the same time and apparently in different parts of the deck as well. Then I did four effects. Triumph, Dunbury Delusion, Carlysle's Homing Card and Kundalini Rising. All this time I needed to keep track of the four cards which I managed to do. Doing this required a lot of thinking about which effects would work without disturbing those four cards. You can do it!! Don't worry about the tricks being new. The older ones are still great. Good Luck to ya, |

If I understand the question: You want to do a routine and in the course of doing that routine get the four aces, unbeknownst to the audience, to the top of the deck so that you can continue with an ace production, etc.?
One way to attack this is to simply do a kind of fake mind reading routine. Have a card selected....you have to know what it is by the time time they put it back or be able to identify it, etc. They return it and you have them shuffle up the deck, etc. Taking the deck you proceed to go through attempting to find the card by mind reading. As you do this you remove and replace cards, etc. gradually getting all the aces to the top. Finally find the card in some snazzy way and continue. The other way is to learn how to do a really good one run thru the deck multiple cull. To that end I have to tell you that the New DVD out called Cullfather is absolutely superb! I just started carrying it and I assume any good shop will have this baby in stock. Really fine teaching and technique that once learned will allow a very clean run thru the deck at the end of which whatever cards you desire will be on top of the deck. Best,

Thanks Brad,
Your idea of a fake mind reading fits the routine as I had intended to do a Pick a Card ( its not as bland as it sounds when done in context ) as a second effect. My presentation of that effect is weak at present as all the punch lies in the reveal. This would make the whole thing a lot more interesting as well as providing me the excuse to go through and move cards around. I will start work with that idea. As I expressed to Jaz--never underestimate the power of a beginner to completely bypass the obvious in search for a more complicated way to present the simple. Thanks also for the heads up on the video--I checked out one of the effects on YouTube and it looks really good. It will have to be an August purchase though, as I have already exceeded my budgeted magic expenditures for July. Thanks---Ken |
