I recently purchased a floating table (the one on eBay) and I REALLY like it. I tried it out at a kid's show today, and it was a big hit.
The problem I have is they are VERY fragile, and take some time to set up and tear down. I keep prying eyes away by setting it up behind my backdrop, and will charge accordingly for the set-up time. I am worried that some kid is going to accidentally destroy it. Any ideas on how to keep it in one piece? |

Float it right out the front door and all the way to your car without stopping. It's a great effect and I love mine but unfortunately it's only a matter of time before it will break.
I use mine for stage shows, school shows; more formal settings where you have complete control over your stage/performance area. Good luck with it! |

I like that idea! A spectacular end. The B/D child and I floating it on down the road . I think it would make it more memorable to the kids. "Mommy, it floated out of the house!"
Actually I got it, and a few other illusions, because I am gearing up to do school shows. That might make a good ending to a school show too. |

I built a large foam core box for mine so that it can be transported completely assembled. I had a run of shows with three or four in a day and I didn't want to keep breaking it down and reassembling it.
I can float the table and after the performance put it into it's protective box and keep it away from prying eyes and hands. The box completely folds flat for storage so it doesn't take up much space when not in use.

I have the floating table and transport it fully assembled. I have a van and the middle seat has nothing but the table laying sideways on it. I have never had a problem with it and it has never moved while driving.

I plan on getting a van sometime, but now I have to make do - so space is an issue.

I think if you're taking it into homes for kids' shows, sooner or later a kid is going to grab it.

No doubt, I just want it later . . .*G* I spoke with the guy that made it today ( http://magicsax.com/ ) and he does birthday shows too, and is careful, and has yet to have a problem.

It's all in the control of your audience. I have one of his tables too and used it at a daycare. My problem is I would rather use something like that in a higher end show where it can be highlighted.
I turned down a 30-second television spot with it because I didn't want to waste that powerful of an illusion on such a short spot...but that's just me. |

Tmowens,
I can't see where that would have wasted the illusion. The 30-second spot would have created interest in you and the illusion. Customers would want to see it live in their homes, daycare or onstage. Andy

If I had a Losander Deluxe Table I would only use it at stage shows too, It is much more fragile and expensive. The one I have doesn't look quite as nice (as the $2200 model of Lasander's), but can perform the same, and I can have 6 for the price of yours. Losander's higher-end tables are very nice, but a bit overpriced (in my opinion).

I perform it in Birthday parties...I transport it in its own hardcase.
I use the blooming flower pot trick first on the floating table before I make the table float... I use the Movie theme from E.T. and end the routine by saying ..."there you have it...my Extra Table or E.T."

I think I have the same table as yours, but I've never performed it at a children's show. The nature of my character and the show I perform make me too "approachable" and, as a result, many kids do come up to me after the show. If a child accidentally leaned on the table or knocked it over, that would be the end of the prop.
But, if you are intent on incorporating this as part of your children's show, I would recommend having a duplicate "broken" table behind your backdrop. Near the end of the routine, have the child let go of the cloth. The table then starts to "get away" from you and dashes behind the curtain. It would be great if you could then stage a huge "crash" and then stumble back out with the duplicate broken table. Since the kids see the broken table, they may not be as inclined to look for the other table that stays hidden behind your curtain. If you work with an assistant, he/she can pack away the floating table before the end of your show. Kent

I have a BD party today, and I am going to try Smartini's advice and float out of the house.

You guys might consider trading up to a Losander table which comes with a lifetime guarantee...just a thought and they currently have a $500 trade in deal.
