Today I looked out on to my patio, and I saw that my figus tree was covered with Japanese beetles, so I ran to Sears, and bought me a beetle trap. Well as soon as I touched the bait they were all over me, and after I stuck that plastic bag to the trap they all left my figus tree. Now just how do those beetles know that what I bought at Sears hardware for $6.75 is more irresistable than food?????

Smells like female beetles having a party that draws 'em in.

You are so protected there in Collegeville. Along with the scent they have a noise level only the female beetles can hear, it plays The Indigo Girls.

I get it this trap has both a male, and a female sex lure, and to think I bought all this for only $6.75 at Sears hardware, thanks Santa. Just what is it may I ask that makes Carson City Nevada such a hub for hordiculture?

Out of curiosity, are you sure that they're Japanese beetles?

A few weeks ago there was a news report in Southern California about Japanese beetles. It seems that the bugs I'd always been told were Japanese beetles -about 1.5" long and 1" wide, dull green and orange on the back, shiny emerald green on the underside - aren't Japanese beetles (though I cannot recall immediately what they are). Japanese beetles are about 3/4" long and 1/2" wide and are very destructive; the bigger beetles are innocuous.

Carson City is a lovely place with fine hard working people. The main park, other than the one near the community center is Fuji Park, right across the street from Costco. They are building a nice fishing pond there by the way....trout, catfish, panfish, should be real nice when it is done. They have a dog park too. The Ren Faire is held there because who really cares if those people step in poop. Back to the hub of horticulture, it isn't, they just have small companies that make stuff and since it is close to the desert and all that they can be out in the middle of no where so it is cool, but if you have a park named Fuji which is a Japanese sounding name you will likely find a beetle or two there. By the way, if you are in town go to Heidis for breakfast, they close at two in the afternoon, really good food and nice gals. If the regional manager is there call him Chuckles, it makes him mad but what can he do about it ya know? Don't go to the Heidis in Fallon, not nearly as good, might have to do with the jet fuel, that is where they do Top Gun training. If they had Top Gun in WW2 the guys would have fought the Japanese, where beetles come from that infect your tree that are killed by traps made in Carson City, capital of Nevada and home of The Rail Road Museum, which is about a mile from Fuji Park. There is a giant version of the trap but it is in the town immediately past Carson City North on 50 called Mound House, make a right on the road past Dicks Bar and go to the bottom of the hill, look for the red lights...wink wink....they also have a sexual lure there.

Maybe the beetles came out of the bait, and your life was running in reverse at that moment?

I've been to the high desert, and there are very few gardens there. I'll never forget my visit to Virginia City. It was so high up that I could not catch my breath. I felt like I was 90 years old.

I live about 30 minutes from Virginia City. What is fun is to head up there (it is above 6000 feet for those not familiar) during the Winter when the locals are the only ones about. They have some very interesting people. This past Winter I sat in on a meeting of miners trying to figure out how to steal an Irish band from a bar in Carson City...and I mean literally how to grab them and drag them up to the city to have them perform w/out prior arrangement.

Carson City is 6,000 above sea level, and that is at the bottom of the mountains. Those miners are something too. They park their trailer over their claim, and work from home.

We are at around 4300 feet, Carson City is at 4600, Virginia City is 6200. From my town you can see the V above the city but it takes 30 minutes to drive around to it. Note the approach from the Carson side is much easier than the Reno side (the mountains lie between two valleys). It should also be noted that they are building a railroad, or rebuilding it, to run from Carson City to Virginia City, the exit is in Moundhouse, home of the famous Bunny Ranch and other tourist sights.

Oh, one more very important thing. When you visit the area after going to Virginia City, the Bunny Ranch, and the Railroad Museum please make sure to go to Reno and go to Magic Underground for one of the best magic shows going, I think it is the best, for information go to renomagic.com

Remember, the only think we appreciate more than you visiting the region is saying goodbye.

The Bunny Ranch. Wow. Got a weird story about the Bunny Ranch (I've actually never been.)

I used to work for a company that made promotional items for other companies through third hand parties. (You couldn't order from them directly, you had to go through a local "promotional company" who would show you their catalog.)

One of those "third party" companies had their own graphic slogans which were put into the "shank" the the #1 keyfob (yes, it's the one shaped like a big 1) These slogans were mostly innocuous (sp) such as "You're #1 with us!" or "#1 for pizza" I did one which was supposed to be put on 500 pink #1 keyfobs and it wasn't until after I realized I'd typed what had to be a bordello (The Bunny Ranch) did I look at the stock slogan they'd picked...

Yup! I've seen those. When I was at the IBM Convention some guys who knew me before moving here asked why I'd picked the place I live. I told them I heard it was legal to do tricks in the county here.....

Here in the county we have The Bunny Ranch, The Kit Kat Ranch, The Sage Ranch, The Bunny Ranch Two, The Benny Ranch (no kiding), and the new and beautiful Wild Horse Ranch....all lit up in red lights with arrows pointing down and interesting signage. For a show I did a joke, since it was for a huge distribution site near Wild Horse Ranch "I can picture the scene now, you get home and your wife asks what you did all day and you reply "packed boxes", she then asks what you were doing after work to make you late by an hour and your answer would be 'the same'." Went over well with the fellas.
