Making your manipulative routine like a movie scene makes it more entertaining to your audience. One type of manipulation, (lets just say cards), shouldn't be more than 6 minutes.

I think Channing Pollock's act was built (perhaps serendipitously) around the number 7--seven doves and seven packs of cards in seven minutes.
Just found the actual quote on MAGIC Magazine's website http://www.magicmagazine.com/may06/may06extra.html "Channing Pollock enjoyed a career unparalleled in the history of magic. His seven-minute act, with seven doves and seven decks of cards, rose to its penultimate perfection in seven years." ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Do your billiard ball act for a dog or a very small child. Keep them watching. Hold their attention on the balls. If you can keep them fascinated enough to watch the whole routine you are on your way.

What souce material do you have to know you are creating magic and not just showing balls and your skill? |

Do you want to know how to make the billiard balls entertaining? Watch Shaun Yee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGwxJC5OfmU&feature=related. No fancy moving about. Just slow and methodical.

MTPascoe, that is beautiful! You're right!
Man, if I could smile like that. I'm not a "smiley" kind of guy. When I smile, I've got a grimace that's just downright ugly. Not putting myself down, mind you, I've been told countless times over the years, that smiling doesn't work for me. I get by with a slight grin, not showing my teeth. I envy those with perfect teeth that can smile, and make other people smile. However, I do get by. Also in the beginning, that changeover palm is superb! That's the way I do it, and he makes it look so easy. That's the move I had trouble with, and took me countless practicing to get it right. Thank you for that, mtpascoe! Doug |

No problem Dougini.
The key to smiling is to think happy thoughts. It was Fred Astaire who said that he never practiced his facial expressions. They just come from your inter emotions. But, you may not want to express that in your routine. You might want a serious expression depending upon what it is you want to convey. Also, smiling comes from the joy of what you are doing. But, be careful. Michael Ammar has a picture of himself when he was younger where he is smiling from ear to ear with a silly grin. He wrote underneath his own caption years later, "My, aren't we full of our self." |

The Shaun Yee vid did nothing for me. However I found Salvano's routine very entertaining http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dywJVJW_KIE&NR=1
Plus, I think Levent's routine takes some topping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdGnGVwaTto plus his billiard ball performance when promoting NBCs Master of Illusion in Atlanta was great too (it starts about 4 mins in) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp9KfeMKmYg

Martino,
That Salvano routine was GREAT! That's the German Wooden set! He also doesn't really smile, just a kind of grin...and that's pretty much what I do, kind of a surprised look, then a sheepish grin. Salvano has a GREAT palm and changeover! I can't quite palm like that! Levant is good, too! Those look like Fakini's. Thank you for bringing those here! Ya know, for a pure, simple routine, I like Salvano! Really there doesn't have to be a lot of FLOURISH, and "dancing", Salvano does it simply and it MYSTIFIES! His is what I call the "classic" routine. Shaun Yee has a great smile, and his is also very "classic". Best to ya, Doug |

I've never been a good-looking guy, and I've simply learned that ever since I was a young man, my "smile" was not one of my better assets. A sincere grin is all I need. I sometimes slip, when I'm around a real "smiley" person, but I catch myself. I guess you'd have to see what I look like, and then you'd understand. At 54, let's just say, it hasn't "improved", LOL! That's why I don't have a picture avatar... Doug |

Channing Pollock never smiled during his act expect at the end and he was good looking. So you really don't need to worry about it. Just let what ever your thoughts are control your facial expression.

Back on topic, if you are interested in, or DO Multiplying Balls, see this video of a guy named Rune Klan, from Denmark. At 5:38 into the video, you will see his version of Multiplying Balls...
The act is all in Danish, but has English subtitles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHyatkRl99g And please, reply with your thoughts. In particular, does he remind you of Amazing Jonathan? I think you'll get a kick out of his act. Do you agree? Doug |

Love his billiards work. I swore I was seeing things. I love the way he makes it go from his pocket back to his hand. Now that's how you make the multiplying ball routine entertaining.
He reminds me of the Amazing Jonathan, but he gets to the magic much quicker which I like. (He stole the giant cups and balls from me, lol. That's what I get from waiting to present and idea. Someone else thinks of it first and performs it.) |

My Vernets are all chrome. You could add one to your set and adapt this. Display a box of wrenolds wrap (aluminum foil) and tear off a sheet. Roll into a ball of proper size then false transfer to a chrome vernet ball. Then start multiplying. I only performed it once but thought it was different.

Mtpascoe, yep, I had to watch it twice, LOL! The pocket to the hand, and he REPEATS it! Notice where HE looks, and you find you look there, too! A great example.
Rick, I used to have the Vernets! What a brilliant idea! Aluminum foil! Really, that's the thinking, I believe that makes each act different! I hope you don't mind if I work on that, and modify it to the Golf Ball set I have. Roll tissue paper into a ball, and change it to a golf ball! Ha haaaa! That's what I love about the Café, you guys are great! Doug |
