Okay, first of all, I didn't know where to post this so I chose this place.
I have been performing stage magic for a while. The problem is I am trying to be more entertaining, sometimes I feel like I am just doing the trick instead of performing. I usually try to talk to my audience (My creativity in the patter realm isn't very good, so I just try to communicate when I feel like I am loosing the spectators) parts of my show are silent, so it is hard to figure out how well I am doing there. I always ask for feedback on my performances after the show, everyone says I did great, but I feel like not everyone is being completely honest. I usually test my mom's honesty when she says that I did good by not putting a whole lot of effort during rehearsal or before the show, she doesn't say I messed up, instead I get the usual, you did good! My greatest pet peeve is that people can't distinguish a magic performance from a magic trick. I always ask for comments after the show, I never get any. Am I over reacting? Last performance my mom was going to video tape the show (The video camera was finally working again after 6 years of malfunctioning) but she forgot the blank tape! So I have no idea how good I really am in spectator's point of view. Is there any advice out there on how to either keep me relaxed ( I usually get all stirred up after the show instead of the usually before the show)or is there any advice to help me realize where I stand in terms of entertainment standards? (Sorry if this is hard to follow)

Are you getting any applause? If so, is it genuine applause or polite applause? You can tell. That's always a good clue.

The applause is pretty loud, depending on how many people are watching.
