I started a daily blog and it is rapidly being dominated by writing concerning magic. I'd appreciate some other Café members having a look and giving me feedback (e-mail or posted comments) on what I have so far.
It's not directed at magicians. Rather, it's for everyone, and I tie in a lesson you are all familiar with from magic and apply it to daily life. You can't fool me! http://milocast.com/?p=5 First, they must like you. http://milocast.com/?p=6 Thanks, Shawn |

Like it Shawn! Short but thought-provoking.

To everyone: Thanks very much for taking the time to read the short articles and reply. It's encouraging how well-received they have been by my magic brethren.
Trekdad: I try to keep them short because I want to stick to a daily schedule, and I don't want to burn out myself or my readers. mrbilldentertainer: Thanks for the high compliment! Although the ideas behind that article have often been repeated, I got a lot of the inspiration for it from Jeff & Abbi McBride's recent lecture and Master Class at Denny & Lee's. DStachowiak: I hope to make it there -- I didn't go last month either. It depends on whether we're having people over that day or not. Plus, I had just been there for two days for the McBride events and was tired of driving last month. :o) Thanks again to all. Please spread the word about the blog to your friends if you like it. I also welcome comments left on the blog itself. Shawn |

I enjoyed the "You Can't Fool Me" piece, which is SO true.
Usually you can tell right away when someone has that sort of attitude -- they will stand in front of you with their arms folded over, feet spread apart, etc. Once in a while you can win them over, in which case they will become your most ardent fans. Then again, for some people, you could walk on water and they still wouldn't be impressed. I have given up tryng to convert people, it's just not worth the time and energy. If they aren't enjoying my trick, despite my best efforts, I just move on. There's no law I know of that says I have to entertain everyone! SETH

The "They must Like You" article is must reading. In a performing situation audiences generally want you to succeed. Nobody goes to a show to heart a singer hit bad notes or a comedian not be funny. Think of how fearful some people are speaking in front of a group. In high school I remember people who were frozen in place, but all the other students were silently pulling for them.
Magicians have an additional step. Audiences want your performance to be successful but they seem to need a helping hand to suspend disbelief. Liking you is just that. Even performers from the dark, horror or bizarre school need to be liked in their own context, ie: it's fun to be scared. I've seen less than skillful magicians hold a crowd be cause the crowd liked them. |

Thanks, guys! I just put up today's article, which is called "Tricks vs. Magic."
http://milocast.com/?p=10 It's really heartwarming to see the responses I'm getting from this group. I'm glad that my experiences and thoughts are shared by so many, and it gives me the motivation to continue writing. Shawn |

Love your posts, Shawn. You raise a lot of important points. I'm going to try and keep the idea of "breaking the tedium of reality" in mind tomorrow as I play at the market.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. |

Great articles!
P.S. Have you read "Maximum Entertainment" by Ken Weber? The Denny and Lee Magic Studio usually has this in stock. http://www.dennymagic.com (tell Denny we said hi. Dave & Lindy). Click here to view attached image.

I try to make it there for the Denny & Lee Magic Club meetings each month anyway. Here's a link to my most recent magic articles. I have been writing more on other topics than on magic recently, but I figure that visitors from this forum may be more interested in the magic topics. But I'd definitely be interested in receiving feedback on those through PM or e-mail, if the responses would be considered off-topic in this forum. http://milocast.com/?cat=7 Latest magic posts are on keeping secrets and "new" magic.
