I want to formally introduce myself to the members of The Magic Café. My real name is Christopher Lovetere and this is the first website that I have actually revealed my real name. The primary reason for this is that I have had heated discussions with people on other non-magical websites and their responses have often been hostile. My problem is that I can't resist responding to ignorant statements and inaccuracies. This site is the warmest and friendliest website that I have experienced. I feel a kindred spirit with almost every person who posts here.
I have always loved magic since I was a little boy. An old Italian uncle of mine used to make a little birdie fly away and return (tissue paper stuck to a different finger on each hand). I got library books as a pre-teen and made up a little show for my family. I lost interest as I hit my teens. In the late 80's I moved to California to pursue a career as an actor. I was good, but I had no step by step plan for success. I just kept hoping someone would discover me and guide me. After two years I got cast in a play as Houdini. My director told me to learn a few magic tricks and she sent me to Hollywood Magic. I had never seen a store that sold magic. I was like a kid again. I purchased the Siberian Chain Escape and I was hooked. Every week I went to the store and bought another trick. It was draining my bank account quickly. I had enough magic to put on a show and a director friend hired me to perform at his granddaughter's birthday. He paid me $50. I had never made a cent acting. I was transformed. I realized I could return to Massachusetts and earn money as a magician. I have been doing exactly that ever since. In 1990 I invented "The Supernova" and received a United States Patent. I had hopes of selling it to the world, but only ended up selling it to magicians. If you dig out your April 1992 MUM, July 1992 Linking Ring, August 1992 MAGIC or November 1992 Genii you will find a review of my wand in the new products section. David Copperfield has one version that I made special for him and I'd love to here if anyone else has one. I perform mainly for children and the elderly, but I have also worked closeup at restaurants. I make just enough money to support a family of seven and I love what I do. Magic is one of those things that I would do for free, but thank God I can get paid for it. I look forward to learning and sharing with all of you. If any of you would like to correspond you can email me at loveterechris@comcast.net. Magically yours, Christopher |

Hi Christopher, welcome to the Magic Café.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I've really enjoyed reading it. When you mentioned your old Italian uncle doing the fly-away birdie on his fingers, you were describing my dad! My father (Brooklyn native and also Italian... like his son) would perform this effect for me and other children with pieces of paper torn from a paper napkin or tissue. He stumped me for many of my young years, until he started wearing a ring on his finger! Those are very fond and dear memories for me. Thank you for recalling them for me. Maybe your acting career didn't take off, but your magic career certainly did. Working full time in magic AND being able to support a family of seven is probably the greatest magic there is. Congratulations to you. Your wife and children must be very supportive and proud of you. And rightfully so! Spending time with your children and entertaining them with magic will create wonderful memories that they will carry with them the rest of their lives. Welcome to The Magic Café Christopher. I'm looking forward to chatting with you inside. Joe |

Christopher,
Welcome to the Café. I've been out of the magic "ring" for a while, so now I'm going to google around for "supernova". It's probably not the girl I know up in Kodiak Alaska. Your story of your first visit to Hollywood Magic reminds me of the first time I crashed the Castle. All my string pulling magi-buds were inaccessable that day, so I went for my debut to Hollywood Magic. After watching several lackluster Svengali presentations for layman, a clerk asked if I needed anything. The tone of his voice translated to "buy or get out now". I quickly darted my left hand to his left ear like it was a prize fight. Yanking a large silk from his ear, I laid it down on the counter. He looked at the beatiful large clock silk screened onto the foulard and saw the time is dispayed and then turned around to verify that the clock on the wall also displayed 2:17. While his head raced, and he tortured the silk through his hands, I told him I would like three more silks that always displayed the correct time. He replied that they were currently out of stock (propably not, cause it's my own stuff). I immediately asked if he could get me into the castle that evening, and he was more than happy to oblige. Anyhow, thanks for reminding me of that first visit to Hollywood magic, it still gets me chuckling.....

Hi Ted Danger!
That's a great name and photo. I know the tone of which you speak. I love your clock story, I guess "timing" is everything. The castle is must see for any magician in who finds themselves in Hollywood. I loved "Irma" the piano and even bought her a drink of milk which she slowly vanished before me. She was taking requests and I asked her to play something by the Cars. She immediately launched a Chevy car commercial jingle. It was recognizable and hilarious. Thanks for sharing. |

Hi Christopher,
That's a funny story about Irma, the Castle's invisible ghost who plays the piano. I've never asked her to play something by The Cars, but I'll ask her next week. Let's she if she 'remembers' the gag. And if you and Ted Danger are not member's of the Castle yet (non-resident magicians), why not??? Best to you. Joe |

Yo Joe,
What benefit would there be in being a member of the Castle? I don't expect to return to California in this lifetime. I did love being at the Castle and it is unforgettable. Do you still have to give the Owl, with red eyes if I remember correctly, the secret password? I surely would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't experienced it. Thanks, Christopher |
